Three MWC Athletes Named Academic All-Americans

St. Norbert senior tennis players Aaron Sunday and Andrew Winters have both been named to the 2007 College Division CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first-team at-large teams, while Illinois College senior golfer Emma Reuschel was a second-team selection.

It is Sunday’s second Academic All-America honor, after netting third-team accolades on the at-large squad in 2006. Winters claimed his first at-large team Academic All-America honor, but his third overall, following his first-team Academic All-American honors in men’s soccer in 2005 and 2006.

Ripon Women's Golf Coach Bill Peters Steps Down

After three years as head coach of the Ripon women's golf team, Bill Peters has resigned. The former golf pro at Tuscumbia Golf Club in Green Lake, Wis. stepped down after being hired as the head pro at Whispering Springs Golf Club in Fond du Lac, Wis.

In his three seasons as head coach of the Red Hawks, Peters led the Red Hawks to a pair of fifth-place finishes, as well as a second-place finish in 2005.

Illinois College's Reuschel Selected To Academic All-District Team

Illinois College senior women’s golfer Emma Reuschel was named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District At-Large First Team.

The summa cum laude graduate, who compiled a 4.0 grade point average during her time at Illinois College, recently served as the co-valedictorian at graduation in May.

Reuschel was a key part of a Lady Blues women’s golf program that started a run of four consecutive conference championships during her freshman season. She finished in 10 th place individually at the 2006 championship meet.

Illinois College’s Cappel Named All-American

The National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) has named Illinois College senior Carey Cappel (right) to its Honorable Mention NCAA Division III All-American Team.

Cappel was the individual medalist at all four Midwest Conference Women’s Golf Championships in her career, leading the Lady Blues to four consecutive team titles. Lady Blues Finish 20th At NCAA National Championship Tournament

The Illinois College Lady Blues finished 20th out of a field of 20 teams at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, hosted by El Campeon Golf Course at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. The four-day, 72-hole event was held from Tuesday-Friday, May 8-11.

The meet marked the Lady Blues first-ever trip to the NCAA tourney and the first appearance by a Midwest Conference school as well. Illinois College earned the conference’s inaugural automatic NCAA Tournament berth with their fourth consecutive league crown in the fall of 2006.

Only two of the Lady Blues scoring players from their MWC title team were able to compete in the NCAA Tournament. The overlap of softball season prevented senior Carey Cappel, the four-time defending MWC individual champion and All-American, from participating in the NCAA Tournament.

Janelle Kuhn paced head coach Brenna Kelly’s squad at the national meet, as the sophomore carded a 72-hole total of 362 to tie for 73rd place.

Illinois College, Carey Cappel Win Fourth Straight MWC Titles

The format changed but the results did not. Moving to a three-day, 54-hole event for the first time didn't stop Illinois College from claiming its fourth consecutive Midwest Conference Women's Golf Championship. The Lady Blues shot a combined 1017 (345-347-325) to win by 110 strokes over second-place Grinnell (1127) at the Soangetaha Country Club in Galesburg, Ill.

With Illinois College in control since the first round, the only drama that remained was Carey Cappel’s (Illinois College) quest to become the second MWC golfer to win four consecutive conference medalist honors. Trailing teammate Kristen Schmalz by three shots entering Sunday's play, Cappel carded a tournament-best even-par-round of 74 to win by nine shots.  Cappel finished with a 245 (86-85-74) to overtake Schmalz (81-87-86-254).  Janelle Kuhn gave the Lady Blues the top three individuals with a 255 total after a 78 Sunday.  Cappel and Kuhn had the tournament's only rounds under 80.

The Lady Blues receive the conference's automatic qualifier to the 2007 NCAA Women's Golf Championship Tournament.
