Lawrence’s Chris Braier and Beloit’s Josh Hinz became the second and third players, respectively, in MWC history to become two-time D3hoops.com All-Americans, while the selection of Carroll’s Crystal Hoewisch ended a four-year hiatus for MWC women.
Braier (right), a 6-4 senior forward, was a third-team All-American selection after guiding the Vikings to a 25-1 record, a third consecutive MWC Championship, a third straight MWC Tournament title and the No.1 ranking in the country for the final two weeks of the regular-season. Hinz (left), a 6-6 senior forward who was a member of the All-American fourth team last season, ranked second in the conference in scoring (21.3 ppg) and rebounding (11.8 rpg) this year en route to an Honorable Mention All-American selection. The a three-time All-MWC first-team selection also posted a league-best 15 double-doubles this year.
Hoewisch (right) became the third women’s player in MWC history to be selected as a D3hoops.com All-American, as the sophomore guard landed on the Honorable Mention team. Carroll (18-4, 12-3) recorded a big win over Lawrence (19-3, 12-3) literally and figuratively on Wednesday (Feb. 15) evening, as the Lady Pioneers downed the Vikings, a team they had lost to by 20 points earlier in the season, 72-49. Carroll improved to 11-0 at home this season with the win, but the Lady Pioneers will still need help from fe llow 12-3 squad St. Norbert (15-7, 12-3) to clinch home-court advantage in next weekend’s MWC Tournament (Feb. 24-25). The Green Knights won’t be looking to do Carroll any favors though, as St. Norbert’s hosting possibilities remain intact. The only certainty right now is that no matter what happens this weekend, the Ripon Red Hawks (15-8, 12-4) will enter the tourney as the No. 4 seed. The various tournament scenarios are available in the PDF linked below.

Four MWC student-athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-District V Team. Ripon senior center Karalyn Dehn (right) was a first-team selection, while Carroll senior forward Krista Rode and Monmouth sophomore center Ashley Yeast were named to the second team. Knox senior forward Liz Grana rounded out the MWC’s picks with third-team accolades. D ehn will now be placed on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-American Team. Only first team All-District selections are included on the national ballot.
Dehn currently ranks first in conference in scoring (17.5 ppg) and second in rebounding (9.7 rpg) while guiding the Red Hawks to an MWC Tournament berth. A Psyhcology Major who has earned Academic All-Conference honors in each of the last two seasons, Dehn was a first team All-MWC selection a year ago.
Rode’s (left) consistent play at both ends of the court is one of the big reasons the Lady Pioneers are returning to the MWC Tournament this season for the first time since 2001-02. Rode currently ranks second on her squad in scoring (14.5 ppg), while leading the team rebounding (6.5 rpg).
Yeast (right), a three-time Dean’s List recipient, leads the MWC in rebounding (11.7 rpg) and currently ranks 11 th in NCAA DIII in rebound per game. She also tops the conference in double-doubles (12) and is second on her team in scoring (11.1 ppg).
Grana (left) leads the Prairie Fire in scoring (12.2 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg) this season. A two-time Academic All-Conference pick and second team All-MWC selection, Grana broke the school career rebounding mark after pulling down her 746 th career board on Feb. 4. |

Monmouth senior point guard Courtney Scherrer moved into first place on the school’s all-time career assist list on Feb. 8 during the Fighting Scots 62-50 vic tory at Knox.
Entering the game, Scherrer needed one assist to tie Vanessa Treat at 331 for the all-time lead. After tying the mark in the first half, Scherrer found junior Laura Jahn with an inside dish midway through the second half, giving Jahn an easy basket and Scherrer the record.
Now that Scherrer has topped the career assist mark, she’ll be looking to eclipse the single-season assist record. She needs five dimes to pass Treat’s record of 113 set in 1995-96.

The field is set for the 2006 MWC Women’s Basketball Tournament following a weekend that saw the league’s top four teams all go 2-0 to reach double-digit conference wins overall. Carroll (17-3, 11-2 MWC), Lawrence (18-2, 11-2), Ripon (13-7, 10-3) and St. Norbert (13-7, 10-3) have all punched their postseason tickets for Friday and Saturday, February 24-25. A few key remaining games that could double as tourney previews; Ripon at St. Norbert (Feb.8), Carroll at Ripon (Feb. 11), Lawrence at Carroll (Feb. 15) and St. Norbert at Lawrence (Feb. 18).

Senior forward Krista Rode became the 10th player in Carroll women’s basketball history to rec ord 500 career rebounds. Rode accomplished the feat on Saturday, Jan. 21 in Carroll’s 66-51 win over MWC foe Beloit. In that game, Rode scored a game-high 26 points, grabbed seven rebounds and tied the school record for most three-pointers made (6) in a game. Rode now has 506 career rebounds, putting her 9th on the all-time list. She also currently has 906 career points and will attempt to become just the 9th Lady Pioneer to record 1,000 career points.
If Rode does reach 1,000 career points, she will join Mary Uhalt (1974-1978), Pam DuBiel (1981-1985), Lynn Dusold (1983-1987), Bet-Z Boenning (1989-1993) and Crystal Grosskopf (1996-2000) as the only Carroll players to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. |

Watch video (wmv) of MWC Commissioner Chris Graham talking about webcast. Highlights of the Grinnell vs. Lawrence men's game are available on the men's basketball homepage.
The Midwest Conference teamed up with media technology firm Penn Atlantic to webcast four MWC men’s and women’s basketball games, complete with full audio and video, free of charge on Friday, Jan. 13. The contests, which featured Lake Forest at Ripon and Grinnell at Lawrence, were dubbed “test” games and could result in future endeavors with Penn Atlantic that would include the possibility of broadcasting all team sports on the internet.
Complete viewership numbers will not be available until early next week, but preliminary numbers showed that over 100 people watched the women’s contests and over 300 people tuned in to view the men’s games. Represented in those numbers were at least 25 states and six different countries. The four Penn Atlantic web pages featuring the game links, which were available on the MWC homepage and on the websites of the participating institutions, received over 3,300 hits during the evening.
MWC Commissioner Chris Graham commented on the event, “We feel that the test was a resounding success. We were very encouraged by the number of streams that we were able to provide our fans and look forward to future broadcast opportunities within the conference.”
Penn Atlantic CEO Jack Pennington was also happy with the results, pointing to a time period just after eight o’clock when the streaming websites reached a peak of one hit per second. |
| |

The links to the live MWC men’s and women’s basketball game webcasts are available above. Both women’s contests tip-off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 13 with the men’s contests set to follow at 7:30 p.m.
To maximize your viewing experience, we recommend that you take the time to read over the “Frequently Asked Questions” section located on the right side of the webcast page. This will help ensure that your system can handle the streaming capacity.
Channel 19's Frank Bush and Steve Prestegard will call the action in Ripon, while WFLM's Ken Alvord and Greg Haas will be at the microphone in Appleton. |
