Senior setter Abbey Sutherland from St.
Norbert and senior middle hitter Emily Beckwith of Illinois C. were
recently selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)
All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention Team for 2003. Sutherland and Beckwith
also shared the Player of the Year honors in the MWC during the 2003

Illinois College's Heather Jonasson named second
team
Academic All-District
Illinois College junior Heather Jonasson,
from Schaumburg, Ill., was recently named to the Academic All-District
5 second team by voting members of the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA) in that division. Jonasson is an accounting and
economics major currently holding a perfect 4.00 GPA. Click

Lake Forest wins fifth championship
in seven years, Carroll claims second
History was made Saturday afternoon at Schuldes
Sportscenter in DePere, Wis., as the #5-seed Lake Forest College downed
#7-seed Carroll College 31-29, 30-24, 29-31, 30-14 to win the 2003 MWC
Championship. The championship game marked the first time ever in MWC
Volleyball Tournament history that both teams playing were less than the
#3 seed coming into the tournament. As the fifth seed, Lake Forest becomes
the only school to ever win the title below the #3 seed also.
The Foresters made it to the final game by
defeating defending champion, host and tournament favorite St. Norbert
3-1. The Pioneers were victorious over divisonal opponnent Beloit in the
semifinals, 3-0. St. Norbert finished in third place by beating Beloit
3-0 and in the fifth place game it was Illinois C. over Monmouth three
games to one.
Lake
Forest
also
earns
the
MWC's
automatic
bid
to
the
2003
NCAA
Division
III
National
Tournament.

Foresters
will
find
out
who
they
play
on
Sunday
evening.
#2, #3, and #4 seeds fall in first games;
defending Champion St. Norbert moves on to Saturday; Carroll and Beloit
to play for a chance at the title
Day one of the 2003 MWC Volleyball Championship Tournament
proivded more excitment, more surprises and more upsets than in any recent
years.
As expected, the first match of the day between South
Division rivals Grinnell and Knox went the distance with the Pioneers
winning in five games. Carroll shutout North Division foe Lawrence 3-0
in the other opening round match. Lake Forest avenged a loss to Ripon
from the 2003 Crossover by defeating the fourth seeded Red Hawks 3-1 while
Beloit upended the third seed Monmouth in five games, the last four of
which were all decided by only two points each.
Defending Champion St. Norbert took the floor for the
first time in round three and rebounded from a first game loss to Grinnell
by taking the next three straight and the match. The upset of the night,
arguably, came at the hands of Carroll who dropped#2 seed Illinois C.
in three straight games. All three games were not only decided by two
points each, but all of them went extra points before being decided. In
the night caps Knox knocked Ripon out of the tourney with a 3-0 victory
and Monmouth won games two through four after falling behind 1-0 and knocked
out Lawrence 3-1.
