2014 Softball Performers of the Week

Courtney Kwasnitza - Catcher - Illinois College
Junior - Stonewall, Manitoba, Canada

Kwasnitza had a strong week as the Illinois College softball team posted a record of 2-4 at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Kwasnitza batted .364 with a home run, triple, four runs and four RBIs. In a 6-3 win over Houghton College, Kwasnitza was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run.

Sally Snarski - Third Base - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Waukegan, Ill.

Snarski belted five home runs and drove in 14 during her first week as a Forester. She batted .375 (12-for-32) and slugged .906 as Lake Forest started the season with a 6-4 record at the Dot Richardson Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Highlighting her week was a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Foresters a 6-5 victory over UW-Stevens Point on March 14.

Skyler Johnson - Monmouth College
Junior - Glasford, Ill.

Johnson is enjoying the best start of her career after one week of games. The junior posted a 4-0 record last week while compiling a 1.31 ERA in 21.1 innings of work. She leads the staff with 18 strikeouts.

Lydia Stariha - Catcher - Grinnell College
Freshman - LaSalle, Ill.

Stariha began her collegiate career with a sizzling performance, hitting .545 in the team’s seven-game spring break trip at Arizona. She was 12-of-22 at the plate, stole a pair of bases and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.

Kara Vance - Lawrence University
Junior - Racine, Wis.

Vance picked up a pair of wins in Lawrence’s opening two days of its spring break trip to Florida. Vance is 2-1 with a 0.93 earned run average in her three appearances that span 15 innings. Vance got her first win of the season with two innings of hitless relief in Lawrence’s 8-7 comeback win over SUNY-Fredonia. She also went the distance, allowing six hits and one run, in Lawrence’s 3-1 victory over Bethel (Minn.).

Kelsey Boss - Outfield - Cornell College
Junior - Deltona, Fla. 

Boss hit a hefty .706 (12-of-17) in leading the Rams to a 5-1 record last week, which included a split at ninth-ranked Coe. Cornell’s leadoff hitter tallied two doubles, six walks, six RBIs and seven runs in compiling an .824 slugging percentage. Boss leads the team with a .476 season batting average.

Jessi Werner - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Temperance, Mich.

Werner started all four games as Lake Forest recorded doubleheader sweeps at Illinois College and Monmouth College over the weekend. She was 2-0 with a 2.33 earned run average and struck out 21 batters while walking just two in 15 innings of work. She surrendered 13 hits on the weekend, including just two while blanking Monmouth in game two on Sunday.

Sally Snarski - First Base - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Waukegan, Ill. 

Snarski helped lead Lake Forest to a 4-0 record over the weekend. She was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one driven in, and a stolen base during the Foresters’ doubleheader sweep of visiting Knox College on Saturday. Lake Forest hosted and defeated Robert Morris University 7-1 and 12-11 on Sunday and Snarski belted a home run in each contest. She also doubled in the opener and singled in a four-run seventh inning rally that capped off a comeback from a 9-2 deficit. She batted .545 (6-for-11) and posted a 1.182 slugging percentage on the weekend. She also scored and drove in four runs each.

Jenny McTague - Lake Forest College
Freshman - Northbrook, Ill.

McTague earned two of Lake Forest’s four victories during an undefeated weekend. She allowed just one hit and struck out four batters in the first three innings of the team’s 13-0 defeat of Knox College on Saturday. She also pitched four scoreless innings of relief in a 7-1 game one victory over Robert Morris University on Sunday. She surrendered three base hits and struck out three batters in the contest. McTague finished the weekend with seven strikeouts in seven shutout innings and opponents batted just .174 against her.

Sam Ritsema - Shortstop - Lake Forest College
Senior - Hudsonville, Mich. 

Ritsema batted .556 with a 1.167 slugging percentage while helping lead Lake Forest to five victories in as many games at the annual MWC Classic. Among her 10 hits on the weekend were her first three home runs of the season and she also had a pair of doubles. Ritsema crossed home plate at least once in every contest and eight times in the five games combined. She also drove in nine runs, including a career-high-tying four against Ripon on Friday.

Jessi Werner - Lake Forest College
Sophomore - Temperance, Mich.

Werner went 3-0 with a 0.78 earned run average at the 2014 MWC Classic over the weekend. She blanked Ripon 10-0 in six innings on Friday, allowing just five hits while striking out three. On Saturday she recorded the 13th no-hitter in program history in an 8-0, five-inning win over Beloit. Werner struck out six Buccaneers in the contest. She finally allowed a pair of runs in the sixth inning of the Foresters’ 15-2 triumph over St. Norbert on Sunday but still finished the game with a career-high 12 strikeouts. Opponents hit just .167 against her on the weekend and she tallied 21 strikeouts in 18 innings of work.

Charlotte Park - Catcher - Monmouth College
Sophomore - Colona, Ill. 

Park assaulted the Monmouth record books last week, setting one homerun record and closing in on another as the Scots swept Knox 12-9 in 10 innings in Game 1 and then outslugged the Fire for a 13-7 victory in Game 2. After going 3-for-6 in the opener, Park found her power stroke in Game 2, going 4-for-4 with four homeruns to set the Scots’ single game record. The sophomore was at it again on Saturday, blasting a solo shot against Washington University to give her seven HRs this season, one shy of the Scots’ single season record. For the week, Park batted .563 (9-for-16) with 6 RBIs, 5 HRs, 24 total bases, 7 runs scored and a 1.500 slugging percentage. The catcher was also behind the plate for more than 29 innings in the four games.

Jackie Sernek - Cornell College
Senior - Chicago, Ill.

Sernek (12-3) became the third Ram in school history to record 300 career strikeouts while picking up two wins and a save during the team’s 4-0 week. Sernek was 2-0 in the circle with a 0.00 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 13.2 innings. She fired four hitless innings in an 8-0 win over Grinnell, followed by a three-hit shutout against Carroll.

Kari Martin - First Base - Cornell College
Junior - Mount Vernon, Iowa 

Martin batted .714 (10-of-14) and compiled a 1.286 slugging percentage in leading the Rams to a 3-1 week. The Ram junior tallied two doubles, two home runs, four runs and six RBIs. Martin boosted her team-best batting average to .388. Cornell finished the season 24-9 overall, 7-3 in the MWC.

Jenny McTague - Lake Forest College
Freshman - Northbrook, Ill.

McTague went 3-1 with a 0.77 earned run average last week. After surrendering just an unearned run in an 8-1 victory over Wheaton College on Monday, she struck out a career-high 11 batters in a 4-3 10-inning loss at #21 University of Chicago on Tuesday. Her 9-1 triumph over Cornell College on Saturday clinched home-field advantage for the Foresters in the MWC Championship Tournament and she closed out the week with 11 more strikeouts in a one-hit shutout of Grinnell on Sunday. McTague struck out 35 batters in 27.1 innings and opponents hit just .173 against her on the week.
