2011 Women's Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week

Corey Hanson - Goalkeeper - Illinois College
Freshman - Woodland, Wash.
Hanson kept the Illinois College women’s soccer team within striking distance of both of its matches over the weekend thanks to her stellar goalkeeping. IC lost the matches by identical 1-0 scores, as Hanson, a freshman, made eight saves in the matches against Cornell and Coe.

Hanson had two more solid outings over the weekend, allowing just a single tally in 200 minutes in goal. Hanson made five saves and earned a clean sheet in a scoreless draw with St. Mary (Kan.) on Saturday before allowing just one goal, while making nine saves, in IC’s 2-1 win over William Penn on Sunday.

Cassie Burke - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Junior - Golden Valley, Minn.
Burke went 2-0 on the week and posted a shutout as Lawrence swept a pair of matches. In a 1-0 win over MSOE on Saturday, Burke made seven saves to post her first shutout of the season. In a 4-1 victory over Lakeland on Sunday, Burke played the first half in goal and made two saves to help Lawrence to a 2-0 lead at the half. Burke also got into the game in the second half and played the final 10 minutes in the midfield. For the week, Burke had a 0.00 goals against average and 1.000 save percentage.

Lexi Soich - Goalkeeper - Ripon College
Sophomore - Franklin, Wis.
Soich helped Ripon win both of their games last week, including a 5-2 victory in their conference opener. In the two games combined, Soich allowed two goals, while saving four shots in 135 minutes of action. She also recorded her first combined shutout of the season, playing the entire first half in Ripon’s 12-0 win at Mount Mary College.

Cassie Burke - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Junior - Golden Valley, Minn.
In Lawrence’s only action of the week, Burke made 13 saves to lead the Vikings to a scoreless tie at Carroll on Oct. 1. The Pioneers fired 19 shots at Burke, who recorded her second shutout of the season.

Hanson, the MWC leader in goals against average, had another good week, tallying 20 saves in matches against Lindenwood University Belleville and Carroll University. Hanson made seven stops in a 3-2 double overtime loss to Lindenwood Belleville and 13 more in a 2-1 loss to Carroll.

Hanson turned in one of her best performances of the year on Saturday in Illinois College’s 0-0 double overtime draw with conference-leading Grinnell College. The Lady Blues were outshot by the Pioneers, 19-9, but Hanson was there to make several key saves; she recorded 15 in the match. Hanson leads the MWC in goals against average (0.96) and save percentage (.860). She is tied for the league lead in shutouts (3).

Samantha Barranco - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Sophomore - Chicago, Ill.
Barranco recorded a pair of shutouts as the Fighting Scots kept their playoff hopes alive during a 2-1 week. She made 11 saves in Monmouth’s 2-0 victory over Illinois College and stopped five shots in a 3-0 blanking of Ripon.

Zoe Kurth - Defense - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Anchorage, Alaska
Kurth led St. Norbert to a 2-0 win over Carroll on Friday, a win that clinched a share of the MWC title for the Green Knights. Kurth played a stellar game at sweeper to help the defense register the shutout. She also scored the Green Knights’ second goal when she headed in a corner kick in the 36th minute.
