BELOIT, Wis. — Maureen Boyle has resigned as the head volleyball and softball coach at Beloit College, Director of Athletics Kim Chandler announced Tuesday. Boyle has accepted a position as the head volleyball coach at her alma mater, Carroll College in Montana.
In two years on the diamond under Boyle’s guidance, the Bucs compiled a 28-29 record, including a 16-12 mark a year ago. In volleyball, where she coached the Bucs for three seasons, she earned a 43-63 overall record, but led the Bucs to a 26-12 mark this past fall as she continued to turn the program around. The 26 victories were the most since the 1994 season and the second-highest total in College history.
Given the transition, Chandler also has announced that Ron Splan will assume the head coaching duties for the Buccaneer softball team. Splan most recently has served as an assistant coach under Boyle, following his 10-year stint as a head coach for the Bucs from 1993-2002. He compiled a 110-150 record in that span and led the Buccaneers to their 1996 Midwest Conference championship. He will begin his duties on Feb. 1, the first official practice date for the Bucs.
This spring will mark Splan’s 20th year as part of the Buccaneer softball program and the 11th as its head coach. Before he assumed head coaching duties in 1993, he was an assistant coach for seven years. Splan has been involved in softball — as a player, coach and umpire — in the Beloit area for more than 50 years.
The Buccaneers five best seasons came under Splan during the 1990s. In 1994, Beloit posted a school-best 22-9 overall record and a 9-1 mark in the MWC. In 1992, the Bucs ended up 20-12 and 6-2 in the conference. In 1997, they finished 20-12 and 7-3 in the league. In 1996, the year Beloit won the league championship, Splan posted a 19-7 overall record and a 7-3 mark in the MWC. In 1995, the Bucs finished 18-7 and 9-1, respectively.
A national search for the head volleyball and softball coaching position will begin immediately. |
