Lake Forest followed its sixth consecutive Midwest Conference Softball Championship with a sweep of the 2006 MWC South Division yearly awards, while two of the three league awards in the North Division were split between co-winners.

Senior shortstop Melissa Wegner (right - .413, 32 R, 6 HR, 17 RBI, 15 SB, .924 Fld%) and senior pitcher Ashley Closson (8-5, 3.12 ERA, 82 K) took home the South Player and Pitcher of the Year awards, respectively, for the Foresters. Lake Forest Lands In Augustana Regional; Faces UW-Eau Claire In First NCAA Contest
The Lake Forest softball team scored two runs to rally and tie Grinnell in the bottom of the sixth inning of Saturday’s MWC Championship game, before winning its fifth consecutive MWC Championship on Erin Watts’ RBI double in the bottom of the seventh. The Foresters also earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and on April 8, the Foresters learned their postseason fate. Seeded as the eighth team in the Augustana Regional, the Foresters open NCAA tourney play against top-seeded UW-Eau Claire in Rock Island, Ill, at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 11. The Foresters are slated to play Aurora or Central in the second game of the double-elimination regional on Friday, May 12.

Lake Forest holds a 1-3 mark against NCAA Tournament qualifiers this season, with a 1-0 triumph over the University of Chicago, the No. 6 seed in the Augustana Regional, as the lone win. Possible second game opponent, Aurora, swept a doubleheader from Lake Forest in late March. The Foresters have won the fist game of their regional in each of the past four NCAA Tournaments, including a 5-0 win over Thomas More last year, head coach Tina Johnson’s (above) first leading the Foresters.

Lake Forest Advances To Championship Game; Ripon Eliminates Lawrence In Extra Innings
Game 7 - Lake Forest 3, Grinnell 2
Katie Bartlett’s second inning home run helped Grinnell take a 2-0 lead early in the championship contest and it looked like it would be enough to give the Pioneers their first-ever MWC softball title. Lake Forest broke through in the bottom of the sixth, using three hits to produce a pair of runs to tie the game. Grinnell went down in order in the top of the seventh and Melissa Wegner opened the Lake Forest seventh with an infield single, before stealing second. After a strikeout, Erin Watts doubled to the wall in left centerfield, bringing home Wegner and the Foresters fifth consecutive MWC Championship. The Foresters became the second team in league history to win five consecutive league titles with the win.

Game 6 - Grinnell 4, Lake Forest 1
Grinnell got all the scoring it would need in the top of the first inning, as Katie Bartlett unloaded the bases with a two-out double that plated three runs. Gaby Flores, Emily Stewart and Lee Anne Steinberg combined to hold the Foresters to four hits in the contest, with Stewart earning the victory.

Game 5 - Grinnell 4, Ripon 2 (8 inn.)
Ripon’s Krista Shafer and Rose Reichhart opened the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back singles and after Chrissy Schneider’s RBI single and an error, both scored to tie the game at 2-2 and force extra innings. The momentum did not last long for the Red Hawks though, as Grinnell’s Darcy Ward hit a towering two-run walk-off home run with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Game 4 - Lake Forest 8, Grinnell 2
Lake Forest’s Christy Condon and Lisa Jeziorny each drove in runs in the fourth inning to give the Foresters a 2-1 lead after falling behind 1-0 in the first frame. Lake Forest would go on to add three runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to take control. Ashley Closson went the distance on the mound en route to her seventh victory of the season, striking out six while allowing five hits and no earned runs.

Game 3 - Ripon 4, Lawrence 3 (8 inn.)
Lawrence broke a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning on Justine Garbarski’s two-RBI double, but the Red Hawks rallied to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning after a Rose Reichhart solo home run and an RBI single from Jen Mueller. Reichhart struck again in the eighth inning when the senior outfielder ripped a leadoff double. After an intentional walk, Reichhart advanced to third and then scored the game-winning run on consecutive wild pitches.

Game 2 - Lake Forest 4, Lawrence 0
Lake Forest’s Kendra Grant pitched a complete-game two-hitter en route to her 11th victory of the season. Christy Condon got the Foresters on the board in the fourth inning when she brought two runs home on a single with two outs and the bases loaded. Condon was on base again in the sixth inning when Lisa Jeziorny homered to push the Forester lead to four runs.

Game 1 - Grinnell 2, Ripon 0
Darcy Ward’s single in the first inning plated Madison Salander to give the Pioneers all the offense they would need in the opening round win. Ward’s defense was also pivotal, as the freshman right fielder threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the fourth inning. Lee Anne Steinberg went the distance on the mound for Grinnell, allowing four hits, while striking out five. Emily Stewart drove in Grinnell’s insurance run in the seventh with a single.

Knox Slugger Closes In On Career Home Run Mark
Knox freshman Kate Latshaw (right) set a new single-season home run mark for the Prairie Fire earlier this season and is on pace to shatter the career home run mark in her first season on campus. The designated hitter/third basemen became Knox’s single-season leader with her fourth home run of the season against Augustana on April 1. Latshaw has added three more round-trippers since to up her season total to seven. She needs one home run to tie the Knox career home run record and two homers to make it her own.

Condon Sets Lake Forest Home Run Mark
Lake Forest sophomore outfielder Christy Condon set a single-season school record for home runs after slugging her ninth round-tripper of the season on April 15. Condon hit one long ball in the first game of the Foresters’ doubleheader against Grinnell and added two more homers in the nightcap to claim the record.

Klamann Moves Into Head Coaching Role For Carroll Softball Squad
As a freshman catcher on the Carroll College softball team in 1999, Eva Klamann dreamed of one day becoming the program’s coach. The dream became a reality when athletic director and former head coach Kris Jacobsen announced Klamann would move from assistant coach to head coach leading into the 2006 season.

Klamann finished her Carroll career with several individual honors after leading the Lady Pioneers to back-to-back Midwest Conference titles in 2000 and 2001. She was named first-team all-conference and first team all-Great Lakes region in 2001 and 2002 and was the MWC’s 2001 Player of the Year in the north division.

The Lady Pioneers finished the 2005 season with a record of 7-21 overall, including a 5-8 mark in the Midwest Conference. The team finished 4 th in the league’s north division.

Beloit Hires Head Softball Coach; Strinz Will Take Over Buccaneer Program
Jami Strinz has been hired as the new head softball coach at Beloit College, Buccaneer Athletic Director Kim Chandler announced today (July 5). Strinz will officially begin her duties at Wisconsin's oldest college on August 15, shortly after she completes her commitment with the Langhirano Caggiati professional softball team in Italy.

She doubled as an assistant coach, where she worked with about 100 girls and women between the ages of 8 and 35. Her primary coaching duties were working with pitchers and hitters at all levels within the club as well as managing Langhirano's junior program. She also conducted numerous pitching and hitting clinics in Italy.

Strinz, an Oregon native, graduated from Bradley University in Illinois in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree in English. She played softball at Peoria and was a pitcher, third baseman and desiganted hitter.
