St. Norbert Wins 2014 Women's Basketball Tournament

DE PERE, Wis. – St. Norbert used a strong start and steady play throughout to capture a title at the 2014 Midwest Conference (MWC) Women’s Basketball Tournament over Monmouth 69-60. With the win the Green Knights earned the MWC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

St. Norbert came out of the gate strong and took control of the game from the onset. The Green Knights scored the first 11 points of the game and didn’t allow Monmouth to get closer than seven points for the rest of the first half. St. Norbert shot 50% from the field (14-of-28) and knocked down all 14 of their free throw attempts en route to the lead.

The second half started much how the first half did as St. Norbert built a 16 point lead only minutes into the half. After the Green Knights went up by 16 the Fighting Scots answered back in a big way with a 15-2 run that spanned over five minutes to cut the lead to only three. Monmouth finally took their first lead of the game at the 9:04 mark but it was short lived as St. Norbert responded with a 9-2 run to pull away and eventually earn the tournament title.

Monmouth was led by Kaley Corban who scored a game-high 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting. Marla Willard posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Brianna Byrne led St. Norbert with 16 points and added five rebounds in the victory. Heidi Van Sistine posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and also blocked a pair of shots in 30 minutes of action. For the game St. Norbert shot 42% from the field and out rebounded Monmouth 40-28. The Green Knights were also a near-perfect 22-of-23 from the free throw line.

The win is the 21st of the season for the Green Knights. They will learn of their opponent in the NCAA Tournament on Monday afternoon.
