ROCKFORD, Ill. – After three days at the Midwest Conference Championship the St. Norbert Green Knights came out on top as they took home the school’s first championship at the 2013 Midwest Conference (MWC) Men’s Golf Championship. The Green Knights shot a third day 313 and finished five shots ahead of runner-up Monmouth with a 783.
Monmouth put on a late charge but couldn’t catch St. Norbert, who led throughout the entire championship, and ended with a three day total of 788. 2012 MWC Champion Carroll finished third with a 791 and totaled a 306 in the final day, best among the eight teams. Both Grinnell and Lawrence ended with scores of 824 to tie for fourth while Illinois Col. was in sixth with a 853. Knox and Ripon rounded out the field with scores of 928 and 931, respectively.
Nic Vrubley became the first St. Norbert player to earn the individual championship as he shot a three day total of 188 which was three shots better than Carroll’s Blaine Lynch who shot a 191. Monmouth’s Britt Bothast was in third with a score of 195 while Jon Cohen (Grinnell) was fourth with a score of 196.
Jacob Hebbard (St. Norbert), Henry Mulvey (Carroll), and Ryan Suttles (Monmouth) all tied for fifth with totals of 197 while the trio of Cory Fell (Monmouth), James Fenner (Knox), and Rudi Pino (Lawrence) all tied for eighth place with a 198. For finishing in the top ten those players are MWC Men’s Golf All-Conference performers for the 2013 season.
Grinnell Head Coach Brian Jaworski was named 2013 Midwest Conference Men’s Golf Coach of the Year to close out the award ceremonies. Coach of the Year is voted on by all nine MWC Men’s Golf head coaches.
With the team championship St. Norbert earns the Midwest Conference’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Men’s Golf Tournament which takes place at the Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort in Destin, Fla. May 14-17, 2013.
