Game 2 – St. Norbert 7, Knox 0]
RIPON, Wis. – St. Norbert scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning and let the pitching do the rest as they moved on to play Ripon in the winners bracket after a 7-0 shutout victory over Knox in the second game of the 2013 Midwest Conference (MWC) Baseball Championship.
Troy Rottier and Chad Ljunggren both singled to start off the game for the Green Knights and then scored on an Alex Larsen double down the left field line to make the score 2-0 with only one out. St. Norbert tagged on another run in the top of the fifth inning when Jose Godinez singled home Ljunggren with two outs to push the lead to three.
St. Norbert put the game away in the seventh inning with three runs on only one hit. With two outs and the bases loaded Godinez drove home all three runs with a double to right field that gave the visiting team a six run lead. The Green Knights tacked on the final run of the game with a Godinez single in the top of the ninth inning.
Ljunggren and Godinez each had three hits on the day with Godinez driving in five of the teams seven runs and Ljunggren scoring four runs. Matt Freeman went the distance yielding only two hits and walking one in the complete game effort.
Phil Tallman and Ryan Hoffman picked up the lone hits for the Prairie Fire while Peter Marquardt took the loss tossing 6.1 innings, giving up five hits and striking out three.
St. Norbert now faces off against Ripon in a winners bracket game while Knox faces Grinnell in the first elimination game later tonight.
