LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Lake Forest and St. Norbert both won semifinal games and now faceoff for a bid to the NCAA Tournament at the 2013 Midwest Conference (MWC) Men’s Soccer Tournament hosted by Lake Forest College.
In the first match of the day the host Foresters scored the first two goals of the game and held off a late Knox rally to advance.
The Foresters got on the board in the 45th minute when Brett Grijalva scored his first goal of the season off a feed from Mahir Mameledzija to send the host into the half with the lead. Lake Forest then extended the lead in the 62nd minute when Mameledzija found the back of the net off a pass from Dylan Hartman to give the Foresters a cushion.
Knox was down but not out as they scored its first goal of the tournament in the 78th minute with Max Gatyas found the back of the net. The Foresters would yield no more goals as the defensive unit allowed no shots the rest of the game to the Prairie Fire.
Ethan Guenther earned the win for Lake Forest making one stop while Sean Dockrell made five saves in the loss for Knox.
In a wild second semifinal game it took 110 minutes and seven rounds in the shootout but St. Norbert came up with the deciding shootout goal in a 0-0 tie that ended with the Green Knights winning in penalty kicks.
Carroll attempted 22 shots which included 12 second half shots but were unable to beat Green Knights goalkeeper Scott Faul. Faul made seven saves on the day including four saves in the penalty kicks to secure the victory for St. Norbert.
Tomek Miaskowski was nearly as good as Faul as he made three saves in the shootout and one during regulation but was beat in the seventh round of the shootout by Brandon Buhr that turned out to be the game-winner.
Lake Forest now hosts St. Norbert tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. at Farwell Field with the winner earning the MWC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
