Lake Forest, Grinnell, St. Norbert All Win Doubles Championships

MADISON, Wis.  – Grinnell, Lake Forest, and St. Norbert each picked up championships in the doubles portion of the 2013 Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championships held in Madison, Wis. Lake Forest won a title in the No. 1 flight while Grinnell won a title in the No. 2 flight with St. Norbert winning gold in the No. 3 flight.

The St. Norbert team of Katherine Ake and Maggie Berens captured the first title of the night with a three set win over the Grinnell tandem of Virginia Purcell and Julia Rumley. The Green Knights won the first set with a 6-2 score before dropping the second set 4-6 and rebounding for a convincing 6-3 third set. Ake and Berens started their championship run by defeating Alex Hinck and Samantha Kinard of Beloit 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and the Carroll team of Samantha Hoyord and Katherine McCarthy 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinals. The doubles title was the 12th overall for St. Norbert and the second time the school has won a title in the No. 3 flight.

Grinnell earned a doubles championship as the duo of Hannah Feldman and Emma Macdonald defeated the St. Norbert team of Ashley Randazzo and Elizabeht Manlick 6-2, 6-3. The Pioneers tandem won a quarterfinal contest against Amanda Buck and Sarah Schmitt of Monmouth 6-0, 6-0 before coming from behind to beat the Carroll team of Julia Patzin and Alison Lambrecht 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals. The doubles title is the 22nd in school history and the 10th in the No. 2 flight.

Lake Forest finished out the night with a gold medal thanks to Sarah Paulson and Christi Valicenti bringing home a win over the Grinnell pair of Shirlene Luk and Sadhana Athreya by the score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. The Foresters started the night with a quarterfinal win over Beloit’s Trina Capelli and Courtney Yates 6-4, 6-2 followed by a 6-0, 6-3 victory in the semifinals against Carroll’s Abigail Pellett and Megan Rosenburg. The doubles championship is the seventh in school history and the second in the No. 1 flight.

The Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championship continues on Sunday when the singles champions will be crowned. The singles tournament starts at 8:00 a.m. at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
