[Full Academic All-Conference]
RIPON, Wis. -- The Midwest Conference (MWC) announced its Academic All-Conference honorees for the 2011-12 season which includes 1,182 student-athletes who represent the MWC's ten institutions in 20 sports.
This year the Academic All-Conference program revamped the criteria which now has a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.33 (3.2 in previous years) and is calculated only in the awarded academic year rather than the cumulative GPA. Another change to the program is that freshmen will now be eligible along with sophomores, juniors and seniors who letter in any of the MWC's fall, winter or spring sports.
Of the 1,182 award winners this season 260 of them were multisport winners. A total of 134 recipients were honored in two sports while 126 were winners in three sports. Including those multisport winners the conference handed out 1,568 awards which surpasses the 1,116 awarded last season.
Grinnell placed a league-high 276 on the list, including 105 in the fall season, most of any team in any season. Carroll finished with 210 recipients that included 33 from its football program which was the most any one team had honored. St. Norbert followed both Pioneer programs with 179 award winners with Lawrence right behind them with 168 honorees. Illinois Col. (164) and Beloit (156) were next on the list while Knox earned 147. Ripon (103), Monmouth (97) and Lake Forest (68) rounded out the institutions.
Football earned 180 Academic All-Conference winners which were the most of any sport in the league followed by women's indoor track & field (139) and women's outdoor track & field (126). Women's soccer checked in with 96 award winners and men's indoor track & field rounded out the top-5 of individual sport winners with 97. Fall sports accounted for 656 honorees followed by winter (483) and spring (424) in the 2011-12 academic year.
