RIPON, Wis. – Ripon defeated St. Norbert in the second championship game to claim their first MWC Tournament Championship since 2008 and in turn snapping St. Norbert’s two year stranglehold with a 7-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
After beating Monmouth in the first elimination game of the day the Green Knights downed Ripon in the first championship game to force a winner take all game in which the host would prevail.
St. Norbert staved off elimination in the first championship game, downing the Red Hawks 7-1, with an offensive onslaught. The Green Knights scored five runs in the first three innings and the pitching staff held Ripon to only two hits in the contest.
St. Norbert used one swing of the bat to plate four runs in the top of the second inning as Narges took a two out, two-strike pitch and went to deep centerfield for a grand slam scoring Steph Brunette, Ashtin Schmechel and Abby Van Straten.
Ripon answered with a lone run in the bottom of the second inning when Beth Ebben scored on a passed ball, but that was all the Red Hawks could muster in the first championship game.
St. Norbert added on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning and the duo of Kayla Krueger and Kari Corbeille shut the door to force a deciding game. Krueger picked up her 11th win of the season going four innings, while Corbeille struck out eight over the final three innings.
Brunette was 4-for-5 in the first game with two RBI and two runs scored. Ebben picked up the only two hits for the Red Hawks in defeat.
The second game was the total opposite of the first game as Brittnee Peotters tossed a complete game six hitter to propel the Red Hawks to their second MWC Tournament Championship in team history.
Ripon scored two runs in the top of the first inning when Alli Jensen doubled home Rieuwpassa before scoring herself on an Ebben single.
It remained a two run game until the top of the sixth inning when Ripon put the game out of reach with a four hit, five run, inning to stretch the lead to seven. The inning was highlighted by a two RBI single by Hester to score Anita Robinson and Ebben.
St. Norbert scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Buboltz homered to left.
Krueger took the loss for St. Norbert only completing an inning of work and yielding two runs on three hits. Krueger also collected two hits on the day.
Robinson and Crystal Burke both collected two hits for Ripon while five different players registered an RBI led by Jordan Hester with two.
With the win the Red Hawks earned the MWC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Ripon will learn their fate when the regional seedlings are released in the near future.
