MONMOUTH, Ill. – After one day the Monmouth Fighting Scots are in the driver’s seat to repeat on the men’s and women’s side at the 2011 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Monmouth College.
Monmouth crowned six total individual champions, two on the men’s side. The men’s competition is very tight after the first day with Monmouth holding only a five point lead on Grinnell. Alex Reich won the individual championship in the 10,000-meter run to highlight the Grinnell competitors. Ripon and Illinois C. are in a deadlock for third place with 38 points and St. Norbert is only two points behind in fifth place. Cory Zimmerman (1,500-meter run) and Caleb Cox (javelin) highlight the champions from Ripon and Illinois C. Beloit, Lawrence, Knox and Carroll round out the men’s scoring leaders.
Four different Monmouth women claimed individual championships as the Fighting Scots hold a 53.5 point lead on St. Norbert. Amanda Streeter (hammer throw, discus), Whitney Dider (pole vault) and Marla Willard won championships for Monmouth while the St. Norbert pair of Kelsey Timm (10,000-meter run) and Emily Schudrowitz (1,500-meter run) took home gold. Illinois College follows in third thanks to a championship in the long jump by Melissa Norville. Grinnell, Ripon and Carroll hold the fourth through sixth spots while Beloit and Lawrence round out the field.
