Grinnell, Lawrence, Win Doubles Championships

MADISON, Wis. – After winning the team championship on Friday afternoon the Grinnell Pioneers captured two doubles titles while Lawrence won the other on the second day of action in the 2011 Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament. 

Elizabeth Larson and Jennifer Roesch won the No. 1 doubles flight for the second consecutive year. The team defeated Beloit’s Taylor Jones and Courtney Yates 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and took three sets to defeat Alyssa Larson and Kate Rasmussen of Carroll (6-2, 2-6, 6-2). The Lawrence pair then won a hard fought match against Grinnell’s Sadhana Athreya and Laura Krull who had defeated them the day before in the semifinal match of the team tournament. The win in the No. 1 doubles flight was the schools eighth ever.

Grinnell’s Constanza Alarcon and Clothilde Thirouin won the No. 2 doubles flight with a convincing 6-0, 6-2 match against Laura Michel and Maria Slusarek in the finals. En route to the finals the Pioneer partners defeated Katie Beadling and Jordan Kuban (Knox; 6-0, 6-2) in the quarterfinals before winning a tight contest against the Lawrence team of Polly Dalton and Carla Schmidt 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. Grinnell now has nine wins all time in the No. 2 doubles, the most of any Midwest Conference school.

Toby Cain and Shirlene Luk took home the No. 3 doubles championship 6-4, 6-0 over the Lawrence duo of Christina Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey. Cain and Luk started the day by taking down Abigail Pellett and Kate Wiseman of Carroll 6-4, 6-2 before defeating the Lake Forest pair of Gracie Mullins Kaitlyn Martin 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinal match. The victory was the school’s seventh all-time in the No.3 doubles flight.

The Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championship continues on Sunday when the singles champions will be crowned. The singles tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. at Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wis.
