Newton Thinking Outside the Box to Prepare for his Career

Academic Spotlight 8 Big

When he was looking for a college, Trevor Newton wasn’t sure what he was looking for, but he knew it when he saw it, or more accurately “felt” it.

“I chose Monmouth because of the feel that I received when I arrived on campus,” Newton explained. “The campus gave me the opportunity to participate and make a difference. College is meant to be a place to get involved and develop new ideas. I felt like Monmouth College is the best place for me to do that.”

Newton has made quite a difference since stepping on campus. He has been virtually everywhere at MC whether on the football field, giving tours on campus to prospective students as a Scot Ambassador and even performing in Theater productions at MC.

An education major, Newton isn’t the only person on campus to make a difference. “(Education professor) Craig Vivian has influenced me quite a bit,” said Newton. “”He’s really inspired me to open my mind to different concepts. I think out-of-the-box more now than when I first came to Monmouth.”

That outside-the-box thinking has Newton planning a unique career path. “I’d like to teach third grade social studies,” said Newton. “Then later on, I’d like to become involved in politics. Maybe at the local level, or even the national level.”

Newton should be well-prepared for the political path after serving as President of the Associated Students of Monmouth College. He also is a member of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program and is heavily involved in the residence halls, serving as the president of his hall council.

If Newton does pursue a political career, he knows Monmouth will be watching, and he’s ready to hold true to his ideals.

“(Assistant football coach) Lyle Pierce has had a tremendous influence on me outside of football,” praised Newton. “He’s a man of integrity who walks the walk. He’s a mentor and a person you can look up to.”

Students on the Monmouth campus look up to Newton who has been a part of organizing new organizations on campus including the Wrestling Club and the Venture Crew.

“I think I’ve become a more well-rounded person,” claimed Newton. “I now understand what it means to be committed and be proud of your accomplishments. By simply trying something new, you can go a long way.”

Newton was also honored during his first year, being selected as ‘Freshman Man of the Year.’ “It was a very satisfying and humble experience to be honored by my peers and faculty,” he commented.

Hoping to make a difference after college when he plans to teach, his enthusiasm for teaching is shown through the smile that is always on his face. Newton assured, “I want to improve the lives of the children I work with.”

Newton feels that anyone who comes to Monmouth should, “Go out, be fearless and get involved.”

"The Midwest Conference is formed as an organization of colleges sharing a similar educational philosophy of inter-collegiate athletics. Conference members believe that intercollegiate athletics provide unique and valuable experiences in the total educational program. They contribute significantly to the development of the individual students and provide excellent opportunity for their growth, self-realization, and the fulfillment of personal potential." (Excerpt from MWC Constitution)

“MWC Stories of Identity and Achievement” is a weekly feature highlighting the pursuits and passions of MWC students outside of athletics and into the classroom, campus and beyond graduation. The MWC Constitution forms the commitment to well-rounded individuals who maintain a distinct yet complimentary identity to that of our successful athletes. Opportunities to pursue their passions and potential in both academic and extra-curricular activities and fully integrate into campus are what make us No Ordinary Conference. In full alignment with the Division III Strategic Positioning Platform, the MWC has been a leader in the balance among academics and athletics as current and former student-athletes continue their pursuit of excellence in all that they do.
