Ripon falls in closing minutes of NCAA match

MWC Champion Ripon College was upended in the first-round of tournament play Wednesday afternoon by visiting Marian College 2-1. With the wind at their backs, the Sabres took an early 1-0 lead midway through the first half before Ripon's Erik Johnson's flip throw found it's way into the Marian goal just minutes later. Ripon controlled much of the second half with ample shot opportunities, but it was a Sabre breakaway with under three minutes remaining that lifted them to victory. Another Johnson flip-throw-in found it's way in front of the goal with seconds remaining but was punched over the crossbar as the buzzer sounded. The Red Hawks, who outshot the Sabres 13-9 and had nine more corner kicks, finished 16-3 on the year. For more on the Div. III tournament, click here.

Ripon makes it four in a row

The Ripon College Red Hawks survived an early semifinal game scare and used a second half outburst in the championship game to win their fourth-consecutive MWC Championship and qualify for the second-straight NCAA Division III National Tournament match. Ripon defeated Beloit 5-2 in the semifinal and Lake Forest 4-0 in the championship game.

Erik Johnson's flip throw from the sideline's turned into an assist to teammate Jordan Wilson's goal giving the Red Hawks the decisive first goal against Lake Forest at 26:33. Ripon tacked on three more scores, two by Matt Schmitz and one by Brian Bale, in the second half as keeper Phil Serna posted the shutout on five saves. Forester keeper Ed Elliott logged two saves in 86 minutes of work.

The Red Hawks faced a familiar post-season opponent in Beloit in the first semifinal match Saturday in Ripon. The Bucs' Alex Briggs put the visitors up 1-0 at the 15-minute mark on a penalty kick. Ripon responded with goals by Matthew Schmitz and Brian Bale at the 26 and 30-minute marks respectively to take the lead for good. Ripon added three more insurance goals in the span of eight minutes early in the second half. The scoring concluded with a Beloit goal by Tony Lopez with just 15 seconds remaining. Ripon outshot Beloit 16-13 and held a 6-1 advantage in corners.

In the other semifinal game on Saturday, Lake Forest's Steve Leroux broke a 0-0 tie against Grinnell with a goal off a Dan Carver assist at 52:50. Chris Mickschl added one more from a Steve Teisl assist at 75:45. Davin Dahl recorded six saves for Grinnell who held a 10-9 shot advantage and 6-5 corner kick advantage over Lake Forest. Ed Elliott had six saves for the Foresters.


Ripon will host first NCAA tournament match

The four-time defending MWC Champion Ripon College Red Hawks will host their first NCAA Division III National Tournament match this Wednesday, Noveber 8 at 1 p.m. The Red Hawks (16-2) will host Marian College (13-8) in a first-round tournament match. 2000 Championship Tournament Set

Ripon to serve as host; Beloit makes comeback

All four teams have now qualified for the 2000 MWC Championship Tournament on Nov. 4 and 5 after a flurry of games this past weekend.

Ripon, who had already qualified for the tournament last week, clinched the top spot in the regular season by defeating Grinnell 4-0 on Saturday and Knox 5-0 on Sunday. Brian Bale had one goal and two assists in the Grinnell win while Matthew Schmitz had two goals in the Knox victory. The Red Hawks, winners of the last three MWC titles, will host their third tournament in the past four years.

Grinnell sealed up third place after rebounding from the Ripon loss with a 3-1 win over Carroll on Sunday. Down 1-0 in the first half, Josh Spencer scored at the 37-minute mark to tie the game before the break. John Palinski took over with two goals in two minutes to help the Pioneers to the win and the tournament berth.

Beloit, riding a three-game winning streak to finish the regular MWC season, will own the fourth and final position after battling back from a 2-4 start in the league. Beloit sat idle this past weekend but received the berth after losses by Carroll, Knox and Monmouth. Knox can tie Beloit with a win over Monmouth on Oct. 28, the final regular season game of the year in the MWC, but Beloit holds the head-to-head tie breaker over the Prairie Fire after a 3-1 win two weeks ago. As the #4 seed, Beloit will play Ripon in a matchup of the championship games over the past three seasons.

Lake Forest, who is also finished with their regular season schedule and sat idle this weekend, assumes the #2 seed.

In other action this weekend St. Norbert defeated Illinois C. 5-1 and tied Monmouth on Sunday 1-1 after two overtimes. Illinois C. picked up a win on Sunday over Lawrence 3-2 after the Vikings fell to Monmouth 4-0 on Saturday.


Lake Forest and Ripon qualify for
2000 MWC Tournament

Two big wins by Lake Forest this weekend over Grinnell and Beloit pushed their record to 6-1 and qualified them for the 2000 MWC Championship Tournament on Nov. 4 and 5. The Foresters join Ripon as the first two teams to qualify for this year's four-team tournament. Ed Elliott posted a shutout and Caleb Chase scored the first goal of the game in the first half as Lake Forest gained a 4-0 road victory at Grinnell Saturday. Sunday the Foresters hosted Beloit and defeated the Bucs 3-1. Chase added another score after teammate Dan Carver broke a 1-1 tie at the 80-minute mark.

Ripon, three-time defending MWC Champions, qualified for their fourth-consecutive league tournament with a 4-1 decision over St. Norbert. Four different Red Hawks scored as they outshot the Green Knights 16-8.

Beloit scored three-first half goals and shut Knox out in the 2nd half as they won 3-1 on Saturday to move back into the playoff picture. Mike Castronova scored two goals in the win.

Knox rebounded on Sunday to edged Illinois C. in Jacksonville 2-1. Brad Smith and Kyle Firebaugh score first-half goals and Matt Nagel recorded five saves to secure the victory for the Prairie Fire who are currently in fourth place.

Carroll also moved back into the playoff picture with a 2-1 win over Larwence. Andy Dyer broke a 1-1 tie with under two-minutes remaining in the contest for the Pioneers third league win of the season.

St. Norbert defeated Lakeland 5-3 in non-conference play Sunday afternoon in Sheboygan.


Ripon holds top spot with win over Lawrence

Ripon scored twice in the first five minutes of Tuesday afternoon's home match against Lawrence and moved to 6-0 in MWC play with a 5-0 victory. Matthew Schmitz scored twice, both on headers and Phil Serna posted the shutout. Tom Murphy recorded ten saves in the loss.

The Red Hawks also recorded a win over rival Beloit on Saturday by the score of 3-2. Brian Bale scored twice, including a the game-winning score at 75 minutes on a penalty kick.


Lake Forest making a run for the tournament

After a season-opening MWC loss, the Foresters have strung together four-straight league wins to move into sole possession of third place. Lake Forest handed Lawrence a 6-0 loss on Saturday in Appleton. All six goals came in the second half for the Foresters, led by Dan Carver's pair of scores.

In non-conference play on Sunday, Lake Forest defeated UW-Platteville at home, 3-1. Chad and Chris Mickschl each scored.


Grinnell takes down Knox, Carroll triumphs

Spurred by six first-half goals, Grinnell maintained a strong-hold on their position near the top of the league with a 7-1 victory over Knox Sunday. Joel Felkey tallied three assists as seven different Pioneer players scored. Mike Berg scored Knox's goal at the 83-minute mark.

Also in Sunday action, Carroll broke a 1-1 tie with just five minutes remaining to leap-frog St. Norbet in the standings with their second MWC victory of the season. Drew Stopka gave Carroll the 1-0 lead at half, but a Nate Zelinski score at the 84-minute mark tied the game. Just one minute later, Garrett Ewald buried a Andy Paroubek assist in the back of the net for the eventual game winner.


Beloit strikes early in first win

Beloit's Mike Flanagan knocked in a Chris Gloyd pass just nine minutes into the contest Wednesday afternoon in Beloit as the Bucs secured their first victory of the season over visiting Carroll, 1-0. Both teams went scoreless for the final 81 minutes in the MWC match-up.

Carroll registered ten shots to Beloit's nine as Buc goalkeeper Josh Prelberg finished with a game-high ten saves.



Double-header weekend wraps up
with key games

Grinnell won their fifth game in a row this season after a 3-1 win over St. Norbert on Saturday and a 2-0 victory over Lawrence on Sunday. Jeff Zdunek had one goal in both games. The two-win weekend places the Pioneers atop the standings with Ripon. The Red Hawks' Brian Bale scored four times in a 6-2 victory over Illinois C. Saturday and Erik Johnson scored two more on Sunday in a 4-1 win over Monmouth.

Knox kept pace with the league leaders by winning back-to-back contests over Lawrence and St. Norbert. Both victories were by a one-goal margin and sent St. Norbert and Lawrence down the standings with two losses each over the weekend.

Carroll lost to Monmouth on a Justin Murray goal six minutes into the first overtime on Saturday, but rebounded on Sunday to shutout Illinois C. in Jacksonville 3-0.

Beloit's non-conference game on Friday night was cancelled due to weather. Lake Forest was idle.

 


Lake Forest continues run

Lake Forest won their third MWC contest in the past four days as the defeated Carroll at home Tuesday afternoon, 4-2. Dan Carver hit for two goals and Chad Mickschl assisted brother Chris Mickschl for another. The Foresters improved to 3-1 in the MWC. For the game box, click here.


Grinnell wins non-conference play

The Pioneers defended their home-field advantage with a 2-0 shutout over Central College. Bethwel Raore and John Palinski each hammered home a goal in Grinnell's four win of the season.

Other non-conference action saw Beloit get tripped up by U. Of Chicago 3-1, Knox get edged in a shootout with Coe 5-4, and Augustana defeating Monmouth 4-1.


Ripon, Grinnell and Lake Forest make early moves in standings

Ripon won their second loop game in as many tries with a 5-2 decision over Carroll at Prairie Fields Saturday afternoon. Carroll got on the board early on a penalty kick two minutes into the game but a Mark Becker goal, and two by Brian Bale to break the tie set the Red Hawks out ahead for good.

In a battle of two 1999 MWC Championship participants, Grinnell used a 3-0 lead to hold off the visiting Bucs of Beloit to improve to 2-1 in the MWC. John Palinski scored the first goal and assisted on the second. Davin Dahl notched 14 saves for Grinnell as they were outshot 18-12.

Lake Forest endured a grueling road-trip over the weekend they took them to DePere, Wis., on Saturday for a 1-0 win over St. Norbert, and to Galesburg, Ill., on Sunday for a 2-1 victory over Knox. Forester Steve Teisl took advantage of dopped ball at the goal for the only score against the Green Knights. Knox gained the early 1-0 lead at the half on Sunday, but Teisl struck again one minute into the second half and Chris Mickschl scored the game-winner with under two minutes remaining. Illinois College and Lawrence fall in non-conference action

Blue Boy reserve Drew Carr found the back of the net with five minutes to go in the game but it wasn't enough as Illinois College lost at home to Blackburn, 3-1, on Saturday.

Lawrence was shutout by visiting St. Olaf on Saturday, 9-0. Tom Murphy had 12 saves for the Vikings.


Illinois C. comes from behind over Monmouth

Trailing 1-0 with just over 10-minutes left to play, Illinois C. connected on two goals in seven minutes, including their final goal with just four minutes remaining, to win their first MWC contest of the season.

Reserve Jared Hartsock tied the game at 1-1 at 79 minutes and Adam DeFrates scored the game winner on a penalty kick with just over 85 minutes gone by in the game. Ryan Schlegel's goal for Monmouth came just two minutes into the contest. Monmouth outshot their opponents 34-11.


Lawrence falls at home

The University of Chicago defeated Lawrence 5-0 in a non-loop contest in Appleton Wednesday afternoon.Tom Murphy recorded eight saves in the loss.


Grinnell shuts out Illinois C.

Darin Dahl recorded three saves and the shutout as Grinnell defeated Illinois C. 3-0 in a loop contest Sunday afternoon. Jeff Zdunek took a Bethwed Radre pass and scored the first goal of the game just 35 seconds in. Eli Wood had a hand in the final two goals with an assist to Justin Bakken on the second and one of his own for the third with 11 minutes remaining.


Ripon plays nationally ranked Oshkosh tough

Nationally-ranked UW-Oshkosh got all they could handle Monday afternoon in Oshkosh as the visiting Red Hawks surrendered just one goal in each half. The Titans first goal came on a penalty kick at 15:37 to break the scoreless tie. Ripon keeper Phil Serna had six saves. Ripon logged eight shots to Oshkosh's 15. The loss was Ripon's first of the season.

 


Monmouth earns win over Grinnell

Steve Gray connected on a first-half goal and teammate T.P. Schrack tickled the twine with one in the second half to propel Monmouth to a 2-1 win over Grinnell in the MWC opener for both teams.

Josh Spencer scored Grinnell's goal in the second half but the Pioneers couldn't overcome a 17-10 shot advantage by the Fighting Scots Saturday afternoon at Monmouth.

In a non-MWC game, Monmouth defeated Cornell 4-2 on Sunday.


Carroll wins one, loses one at North Central

The Carroll Pioneers improved their record to 3-0 on the season with a 3-1 overal North Central College at the North Central Tournament Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9, before losing their first of the season in a 2-1 nail-biter to Mt. Mercy College.


St. Norbert picks up two non-loop wins

Tory Schultz and Bernie Sticka each knocked home one goal in a 2-0 St. Norbert win over non-conference opponent Cardinal Stritch Saturday afternoon. For the game box, click here.

Sunday Adam Winters and Jim Tardy supplied the scoring as the Green Knights came-from behind to beat non-conference opponent Loras at the Cardinal Stritch soccer tournament. Winters was the MVP of the tournament while David Perkins was selected top goaltender. For the Loras box, click here.


Monmouth handles Cornell

After falling behind 1-0 early into the contest Monmouth put together a string of three-unanswered goals and held on for a 4-2 non-conference win at Cornelll Sunday. The Fighting Scots improve to 3-0 overall on the year.


Ripon notches win over Lake Forest

The Red Hawks and Foresters played to a 0-0 tied at the half before Ripon opened up with two goals at the 58-minute mark and 60-minute mark of the second half. The Red Hawks put together another combo of goals at the 79-minute and 80-minute marks to win 4-0 in the MWC opener for both teams.

Phile Serna recorded the shutout for Ripon in goal and had two saves. Ed Elliott had ten saves in 90 minutes for Lake Forest. For the game box, click here.

The Red Hawks also picked up a win on Sunday over UW-Platteville in non-conference play. The 4-0 victory was Ripon's third on the year with no losses.


#5 St. Norbert upsets #2 Beloit in
MWC opener

St. Norbert's Andy Birder connected on his second goal of the game during a scramble in front of the Beloit goal with just under two minutes remaining in the game to give the Green Knights a 3-2 win over last year's regular season champion Thursday afternoon in DePere.

Birder started the scoring 16 minutes into the contest off of assists by Tory Schultz and Jim Tardy. Tardy added one of his own early in the second period to give St. Norbert a comfortable 2-0 lead. The Bucs battled back to tie the game with two goals in the final 30 minutes by Alex Briggs and Chris Wentlandt.

Beloit outshot St. Norbert 16-12 and held a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks. St. Norbert improves to 1-0 MWC and 1-2 overall. Beloit falls to 0-1 MWC and 0-2 overall. For the game box, click here.


Lake Forest takes 2-0 lead at the half,
loses 4-2 to Benedictine

First-half goals by Steve Leroux and Chad Mickscul gave the Foresters a comfortable 2-0 lead at home over Benedictine after one period. Four unanswered goals, after Lake Forest played much of the second half one-man down, led to the 4-2 defeat in their season opener. For the game box, click here.


MWC kicks-off season with a flurry of non-conference play

The Pioneers received two goals from Christian Forsmo, both in the first half, as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win in their season opener on Friday against Maranatha Baptist. Carroll struck again with a big 10-1 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday to start 2-0 on the young season.

Ripon, the defending MWC Champs, ousted Lakeland on Saturday 6-0. Phil Serna recorded a shutout and Joe Buchholz added two goals in the victory.

Beloit squared off with UW-Oshkosh on Friday and held the Titans to a 0-0 tie at the half but surrendered four-unanswered goals to fall to 0-1 on the early season.

Friday afternoon the Green Knights were tied 2-2 with Aurora at intermission thanks to goals by Adam Winters and Bernie Sticka, but St. Norbert was outscored 2-1 in the second period for their first loss of the season. St. Norbert fell to UW-Whitewater 1-0 on Saturday.

In other Saturday afternoon action, Steve Grey notched to scores to help Monmouth handled Central 3-0, while Grinnell's Davin Dahl shutout Augsburg 3-0. Grinnell fell 4-0 to Gustavus on Sunday.

Knox dropped their first game to Principia 5-0, and had Central Michigan locked up in a 2-2 tie before the contest was called due to darkness on Sunday.

The Vikings of Lawrence lost their first two games of the season; 3-1 to Edgewood College and 9-0 to UW-Oshkosh. Joe Siegel scored Lawrence's lone goal against Edgewood. Friday's Lawrence/Wisconsin Lutheran contest was postponed because of lightining and has yet to be rescheduled.


Ripon favored to "three-peat"

The 1998 and 1999 MWC Champion Red Hawks of Ripon College are the preseason favorites to win their third-consecutive title in the upcoming 2000 season. A poll of ten MWC coaches saw Ripon edge out Beloit for first-place.The Buccaneers and the Red Hawks faced each other in the championship game last season. Beloit was the regular season champion in 1999 after tying Ripon with identical 8-1 records. The Buccaneers won the tie-breaker with a decisive 3-1 victory during the regular season.

Grinnell came in a close third while Lake Forest and St. Norbert rounded out the top five. Monmouth finished sixth followed by Carroll, Knox, Lawrence and Illinois C.

The 2000 MWC campaign gets underway on Sept. 7 when Beloit visits St. Norbert. The 2000 MWC Championship will be held on Nov. 4 and 5 and will be hosted by the regular-season champion. The winner of the four-team tournament will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Div. III tournament.
