2007 Performers of the Week
Offense
Week #1: September 3, 2007

Steve Stavropoulos - Forward - Lake Forest College
Junior - Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson

Stavropoulos found the back of the net three times in Lake Forest’s 5-2 victory at Concordia (IL) on Sunday. The Foresters trailed 2-0 before the junior forward scored his first goal at the 34:19 mark. After the Foresters tied the score before halftime, Stavropoulos tallied the game winner at 56:19 and added an insurance tally at 76:53. The game marked Stavropoulos’ first career hat trick.

Defense
Josh Graeber - Defender - Monmouth College
Junior - Bradley, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais

Graeber contributed to a strong defensive effort that allowed his former high school teammate, goalkeeper Owen Robinson, to post a 4-0 shutout victory over Eureka in the Fighting Scots’ season opener. The Monmouth defense did not allow Eureka to post a shot on goal in the contest. The junior defender also contributed on the offensive end, setting up Monmouth’s second goal, as he recorded an assist on Trevor Neff’s netter.

Week #2: September 10, 2007

Demba Camara - Midfielder - Ripon College
Junior - Gambia/Sun Prairie

Camara ended the Red Hawks’ four-game conference losing streak when the junior midfielder’s blast from nearly 35-feet away found the back of the net. The goal, which came in the 77th minute, lifted Ripon to a 2-1 home victory over Lake Forest. Camara also added an assist on a Jared Brown goal in Tuesday’s match against MSOE. Ripon trailed 2-0 at the time, before rallying to finish in a 2-2 tie.

Jacob Gorbaty - Defender - Knox College
Junior - tacoma, Wash./Stadium

Gorbaty anchored a Knox defense which recorded shutout victories in both of its contests last week. The Prairie Fire defeated MacMurray 5-0 on Wednesday and followed with a 3-0 triumph over Eureka on Saturday. The Knox defense limited MacMurray and Eureka to four and two shots on goal, respectively, in the wins.

Week #3: September 17, 2007

John Cremer - Midfielder - St. Norbert College
Junior - Pewaukee, Wis./Waukesha

Cremer scored his first collegiate goal Saturday for the game-winner in a 2-1 win over Carroll. The contest was a rematch of the 2006 MWC tourney finals and got the Green Knights off to 1-0 start in MWC play. The junior midfielder’s marker came in the match’s 80th minute to up St. Norbert’s record to 41-3-2 in MWC play since 2002.

Paul Richter - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Freshman - Garrison, N.Y./Haldane

Paul Richter made the first start of his Lawrence career and posted a double-overtime shutout of Clarke on Saturday. Richter made five saves in a 1-0 Viking victory, as Joe Sluhoski scored in the 109th minute to end the sudden death affair. On the season, Richter has a 0.00 GAA and 1.000 save percentage in 161 minutes of action.

Week #4: September 24, 2007

 

Vince Butitta - Forward - Lawrence University
Freshman - Delavan, Wis./Delavan-Darien

Butitta netted the first two goals of his collegiate career to help the Vikings to a 1-0-1 record last week. The freshman forward broke a 1-1 tie with his goal in the 82nd minute of an eventual 2-2 tie against MWC foe Ripon on Tuesday. Butitta beat the Ripon goalkeeper on a pass from Colin Vize, headed the ball in front of him and then found the empty net for his first career goal. In a 2-1 win over MSOE on Saturday, Butitta broke a scoreless tie when he scored in the 52nd minute off a pass from Joe Sluhoski.

Owen Robinson - Goalkeeper - Monmouth College
Sophomore - Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley-Bourbonnais

Robinson continued his shutout string in Monmouth’s one-and-a-half games last week. The freshman was not scored on during the first 33:18 of the Fighting Scots’ Tuesday match at Grinnell that ended up being postponed by lightning. He then played a full game on Sunday, making two brilliant saves to help Monmouth blank Cornell 3-0. Robinson stretched back to the goal-line to make a diving first-half save, then came off his line to block a one-on-one breakaway attempt in the second half. Counting the time against Grinnell, Robinson has not been scored on in his last 322 minutes in goal.

Week #4: October 1, 2007

Andrew Walsh - Forward - Grinnell College
Junior - Madison, Wis./Madison West

Walsh netted three goals and an assist last week to help the Pioneers to a 2-0 record on the week that upped the team’s MWC record to 3-0 this season. Walsh assisted Andrew Mullins’ game-winning goal and added a goal of his own in Wednesday’s 6-0 over Knox, before scoring the game-winner and an insurance goal in Grinnell’s 3-0 victory against Illinois College on Saturday. The junior forward has five goals and one assist this season.

Sam Lancaster - Goalkeeper - Grinnell College
Senior - St. Paul, Minn./St. Paul Central

Lancaster shutout a pair of conference foes last week to help the Pioneers remain unbeaten (3-0-0) in conference action this season. The senior keeper made six saves in a 6-0 win over Knox on Wednesday and came back for six more stops in Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Illinois College. Lancaster owns a 1.24 goals against average this season and has made 31 total saves.

Week #5: October 8, 2007

Fred Schneider - Forward - Carroll College
Senior - Crystal Lake, Ill./South

Schneider recorded eight points in a trio of conference victories for the Pioneers last week. The senior forward started his week by recording an assist on the game-winning goal in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Beloit. Schneider followed with a pair of goals in Saturday’s 3-2 road triumph over Grinnell, who entered unbeaten in the MWC, as he gave Carroll 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the contest. Schneider closed his week with a goal and an assist during an 8-1 win at Knox on Sunday.

Steve Schnorr - Goalkeeper - Lawrence University
Sophomore - Northfield, Minn./Northfield

Schnorr did not allow a goal in 135 minutes in net during a pair of MWC road victories on Saturday and Sunday. The sophomore goalkeeper made three saves in Lawrence’s 1-0 win at Illinois College on Saturday and then made four saves in the first half of Lawrence’s 3-0 win at Monmouth on Sunday. Schnorr, who did not play the second half against Monmouth, got credit for his first shutout of the season and lowered his goals against average to 1.64 and raised his save percentage to .778.

Week #6: October 15, 2007

Fred Schneider - Forward - Carroll College
Senior - Crystal Lake, Ill./South

Schneider is the MWC Offensive Performer of the Week for the second week in a row after scoring the game-winner in Carroll’s lone contest last week. The senior forward found the back of net in the 55th minute during a 2-0 victory over MWC foe Lawrence on Saturday. Schneider currently ranks third in the conference in points (16) and goals (7).

J.J. Guttman - Defender - Carroll College
Senior - Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie

Guttman played a major role in helping Carroll shutout Lawrence during Saturday’s 2-0 victory that helped the Pioneers improve 4-1-0 in MWC action this season. The senior defender helped limit the Vikings to six shots overall, including three on goal. Carroll has earned three shutouts this season and has limited six opponents to one goal.

Week #7: October 22, 2007

Will Swendson - Forward - Beloit College
Senior - Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc

Swendson played a pivotal role in helping the Bucs return to the MWC playoff picture with a pair of league wins over the weekend. At Monmouth on Saturday, the senior forward recorded an assist on Beloit’s first score of the contest and followed with the game-winning goal in the 61st minute of the 2-1 triumph. One day later at Illinois College, Swendson tied the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute, as Beloit improbably scored again in the 88th minute to pull out another 2-1 victory.

Joe Schwartz - Goalkeeper - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas

Schwartz allowed one goal during a 2-1 MWC win over Lawrence on Friday and then shutout nationally ranked Washington (MO) 1-0 on the road on Sunday. The sophomore goalkeeper made fives saves against the Vikings and 12 stops vs. the Bears to post his fourth shutout of the season. St. Norbert clinched an MWC tourney berth with the win over Lawrence.

Week #8: October 29, 2007

Adam Sanchez - Forward - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Green Bay, Wis./Preble

Sanchez netted a trio of goals over the weekend as the Green Knights picked up a pair of league victories and won their fifth MWC title in six seasons. The sophomore forward scored twice during Saturday’s 7-0 win against Knox and followed with the game’s only marker in a 1-0 triumph over Grinnell on Sunday. A Grinnell victory would have opened the door for Carroll to claim the league championship.

Amir St. Clair - Defender - St. Norbert College
Senior - Batavia, Ill./Batavia

St. Clair has anchored a defensive unit that has now posted three consecutive shutouts, including a win over nationally ranked Washington (Mo) and Sunday’s 1-0 conference win over Grinnell that clinched the MWC title for the Green Knights. The senior defender, who typically marks the opponent’s best scorer, also scored a goal in Saturday’s 7-0 win over Knox.
