2005 Performers of the Week
Week #1: September 6

OFFENSIVE

David Connelly - Knox College - Junior - Defender - Cary, Ill./Cary Grove Connelly came up from his defender position to provide Knox with an offensive spark last week, as the Prairie Fire opened the season with a 1-1 mark. Connelly tied the game at one with the lone Knox goal against Iowa Wesleyan, but the Prairie Fire eventually fell 3-1. Connelly’s game-winner against Clarke College stood up, as Knox went on to claim a 1-0 win after Connelly scored in the 77th minute.

Week #2: September 12

OFFENSIVE

Pa Demba Camara - Forward - Ripon College
Freshman - Sun Prairie, Wis./

Camara made his presence felt in his first ever MWC
contest, as the freshman forward score two goals,
including the game-winner in a 3-2 overtime victory
over Lake Forest. Camara’s second goal of the game
came with 3:22 remaining in overtime, giving Ripon
its first victory of the season and handing Lake Forest its first loss.


DEFENSIVE

Chip Schumacher - Goalkeeper - Beloit College
Senior - Madison, Wis./West

Schumacher was pivotal in goal for the Buccaneers last
week, posting a pair of shutouts, as Beloit upped its
record to 3-0 on the season. Schumacher started the week
with eight saves, including one in overtime, during a 1-0
win over Wisconsin Lutheran. He followed that
performance with three saves against Edgewood, as the Buc’s blanked the Crusaders 1-0.


 
Week #3: September 19

OFFENSIVE

Nick Bonifas - Forward - St. Norbert College - Junior - Stevens Point, Wis.
Bonifas guided the Green Knights to a pair of MWC victories over the weekend, as St. Norbert improved to 5-0 on the season. Bonifas scored St. Norbert’s first and third goals in a 8-0 win against Beloit, before scoring the overtime game-winner during a 1-0 triumph over Lake Forest. Bonifas has notched four of the Green Knights’ game-winning goals this season.

DEFENSIVE

Michael Rietveld - Goalkeeper - St. Norbert College - Freshman - Appleton, Wis./Xavier
Rietveld did not allow a goal during the first two Midwest Conference games of his career. Rietveld worked the first 60 minutes during the Green Knights 8-0 win over Beloit, stopping the only shot he faced. He then went 99:30 between the pipes for a 1-0 overtime shutout win against Lake Forest. Rietveld has yet to allow a goal in just over 353 minutes of work this season.


 
Week #4: September 26

CO-OFFENSIVE

Chris Johnson - Midfielder - Beloit College - Junior - Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln
Johnson scored both goals for the Bucs in a 2-0 victory over Grinnell on Saturday. Johnson’s goals led Beloit to its first MWC win of the fall. A driving rain made conditions in the contest tough, but Johnson took Advantage, scoring on the only two shots he took.

CO-OFFENSIVE

Paul Kallal - Midfielder - Monmouth College - Sophomore - Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville
Kallal came up big for the Fighting Scots in their MWC opener against Grinnell on Sunday. Kallal’s header in the 52nd minute got Monmouth on the board and trimmed the Pioneer lead to 2-1. After another Monmouth goal in the 55th minute, Kallal scored the game-winner when he blasted home a free kick with just 7:36 left to play.

 

DEFENSIVE

David Connelly - Sweeper - Knox College - Junior - Cary, Ill./Cary Grove
Connelly helped Knox to a 1-0-1 record last week that included a 2-1 victory over MacMurray and a 1-1 tie against Illinois College in MWC play. Connelly scored two goals, including the game winner in the 68th minute
against MacMurray. He also helped limit the Blueboys to 10 shots as the Prairie Fire picked up their fourth point in conference action this season. Connelly leads the Prairie Fire in goals with 5 on the season.

 


 
Week #5: October 3

OFFENSIVE

Klas Berghede - Forward - Lawrence University - Junior - Gothenburg, Sweden/Gothenburg Tech.
Berghede scored four goals last week, including two game-winners, as Lawrence posted a perfect 3-0 record against MWC opponents. Berghede started off the week with a pair of goals in a 4-0 win against Ripon College, before netting another game-winner in a 2-1 triumph over Grinnell. The junior forward closed the week by adding an insurance tally in a 2-0 win against Knox. Berghede had not scored a goal yet this entering the week.

DEFENSIVE

Pat Clancy - Sweeper - St. Norbert College - Sophomore - Woodridge, Ill./Marquette
Clancy paced a St. Norbert defense that allowed just two goals in three games last week, as the Green Knights went 3-0 to improve to 9-1 on the season and remain perfect (4-0) in MWC play. In Sunday’s 4-1 win over Grinnell, Clancy and company allowed the Pioneers just one shot over the final 86 minutes of the match. The sophomore sweeper also added an assist in Saturday’s 4-0 win over Knox.

 


 
Week #6: October 10

OFFENSIVE

Steven Stavropoulos - Forward - Lake Forest College - Freshman - Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson
Stavropoulos led Lake Forest to three victories in as many games last week. He scored both of the Foresters’ goals in a 2-0 win over Marian on Tuesday and recorded a pair of assists in a 4-0 triumph over Grinnell on
Saturday. The freshman forward helped keep the Foresters in MWC tourney contention after scoring the lone goal in a 1-0 victory at Beloit on Sunday.

DEFENSIVE

Jacob Elperin - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College - Sophomore - Highland Park, Ill./Lake Forest
Elperin shut out Forester opponents for more than 240 minutes last week, as the sophomore goalie played the entire first half as well as the game’s final 19:05 in the Foresters 2-0 win over Marian on Tuesday. Over the weekend, he also recorded complete game shutouts over conference foes Grinnell College (4-0) and Beloit College (1-0). He saved all seven of the shots on goal he faced during the week.


 
Week #7: October 17

OFFENSIVE

Attila Schmidt - Midfielder - Lake Forest College - Sophomore - Akron, Ohio/Western Reserve
Schmidt had a hand in all four Lake Forest goals last weekend, as the Foresters went on the road to pick up MWC wins over Illinois College (2-1) and Monmouth (2-0). Schmidt registered the assist on the first goal of the game against the Blueboys, before netting the game-winner in the 50th minute. The sophomore midfielder tallied his sixth and seventh goals of the season to account for all of the scoring in the victory over the Scots.

DEFENSIVE

Billy Lanser - Defender - St. Norbert College - Junior - Port Washington, Wis./Port Washington
Lanser led St. Norbert to a pair of MWC victories last week, as the Green Knights handed Carroll its first MWC loss of the season (3-1), before downing Lawrence 3-1. St. Norbert’s defense held Carroll to six shots, including just two on goal, while Lawrence managed only a single shot on goal. The pair of wins improved St. Norbert to 7-0 in the MWC and 18-0-1 in its last 19 league matches.


 
Week #8: October 24

OFFENSIVE

Ryan Pikna - Forward - Lawrence University - Sophomore - Wauwatosa, Wis./West
Both of Pikna’s goal last week were game-winners, as the sophomore forward led Lawrence to a pair of conference road victories and a berth in the 2005 MWC Tournament. Pikna scored in the 41st minute of a 2-0 win over Illinois College on Saturday and then broke a 1-1 tie with a netter in the 49th minute against Monmouth on Sunday. Pikna now has six goals and 15 points on the season.

DEFENSIVE

Jake Elperin - Goalkeeper - Lake Forest College - Sophomore - Highland Park, Ill./Lake Forest Academy
Elperin recorded four saves in Lake Forest’s 1-0 double-overtime victory at Carroll on Tuesday. The victory was not only the Foresters’ eighth in a row overall and fifth straight in league play, it also assured the team spot in the 2005 MWC Tournament. Elperin is now 10-2-0 on the year with five shutouts and has allowed just one goal in his last 562 minutes between the pipes.


 
Week #9: October 31

OFFENSIVE

Trevor Neff - Forward - Monmouth College - Sophomore - Morris, Ill./Coal City
Neff helped Monmouth close its season on a strong note, as the sophomore forward scored the game-winning goals in MWC victories over Illinois College (4-0) and Knox (3-0) last week. Neff, who scored all six of his goals this season in league play, found the back of the net twice
against the Blueboys and once against the Prairie Fire. Both goals were credited as the game-winners.

DEFENSIVE

David Freisleben - Goalkeeper - Ripon College - Junior - Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha
Freisleben came up with a clutch performances to guide the Red Hawks to a berth in the MWC Tournament. The junior goalie made eight saves in the Red Hawks 2-1 victory over Carroll on Wednesday. The winner of the
contest took home the fourth and final MWC tourney bid. Freisleben has only allowed one goal in the last three games and entered the week ranked 17th in the nation in saves per game at a 7.77 clip.
