Knox claims 8th straight
In one of the most competitive men's golf
championships in recent history, Knox College rose to the occassion
and captured their 8th-consecutive MWC title and their league-leading
26th overall. Led by four All-MWC performers the Prairie Fire held off
strong day-two showings by Illinois C. and Grinnell to win by 22 strokes,
the narrowest margin of victory in the past four years. Knox's gross
total of 611 was also the best score in a 36-hole conference championship
since 1982 when the Prairie Fire won the title with a score of 604.
Just 37 strokes, nearly one stroke for
each hole in the tournament, separated the 2nd-place team from the 9th-place
team. Only nine other times in the 65 championships has the last-place
team scored 670 or better in the 36-hole format.
Defending conference champion Andy Gilbert,
from Knox, finished third and was defeated by Pete Noble of Illinois
C. who carded two-consecutive 74's and edged-out his teammate Wes Prather
by two strokes. Noble and Prather, along with Gilbert, were the only
repeat All-MWC performers.
