Grinnell, Iowa - Grinnell College’s John Grotberg proved he could match up with the nation’s best when he competed at the 21st Annual State Farm 3-Point Championships on Thursday, April 2. The event was held at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan, site of the NCAA Division I Final Four.
The senior tallied a score of 17 in the first round, which ranked fifth in the eight-person field and left him just one spot out of qualifying for the semifinals. Each player shot 25 balls from five different racks on the floor, with each made shot counting for one point except for the final ball in each rack which counted as two.
The four semifinalists, in order of finish, were Jimmy Baron of Rhode Island (score of 25), Erik Kangas of Oakland (23), Jack McClinton of Miami (22) and Craig Moore of Northwestern (19).
Kangas and McClinton advanced from the semifinals with scores of 19 and 15, respectively, and McClinton went on to win the title with a score of 22 compared to Kangas’ 17.

Grinnell, Iowa - Grinnell College men’s basketball player John Grotberg will join seven other long-range bombers at the 21 st Annual State Farm College 3-Point Championships on Thursday, April 2 in Auburn Hills, Mich.
The event, which also includes a separate slam dunk competition, will be televised on ESPN at 8 p.m. Central time from the Palace of Auburn Hills, site of the 2009 NCAA Division I Final Four.
Joining Grotberg, the all-time NCAA leader in 3-pointers regardless of level, is the lone Division III player in the field. Joining him are Craig Moore of Northwestern, Kyle McAlarney of Notre Dame, Jimmy Baron of Rhode Island, Erik Kangas of Oakland, Booker Woodfox of Creighton, Alex Ruoff of West Virginia and Jack McClinton of Miami.
“It’s definitely an honor to be selected with all of these great Division I players,” said Grotberg. “I’ve been preparing all spring break for this, mainly on timing and technique of putting up a bunch of balls from different spots on the floor.”
The senior feels Grinnell’s fast style of play will give him an advantage. “I’m used to shooting a high volume of shots quickly,” he said. “I’ve learned how to shoot when I’m tired. Actually, I think we have three or four guys on our Grinnell team who could do pretty well in this contest.”
Grotberg doesn’t expect nerves to play a factor as he steps onto the court in the big arena. “Maybe I’ll be a little nervous at first, but for the most part playing in front of a big audience helps me,” he said. “I did well when we played at Wells Fargo Arena (in Des Moines) this season. I’ll have a lot of family and friends there on Thursday (Grotberg is from nearby Ann Arbor, Mich.), so that will help, too.” |

Lawrence could not hold on for the upset over defending national champion Washington (MO), falling to the Bears 67-65. The Vikings end their season with a 19-7 mark while Washington advcances to play UW-Whitewater in the second round tomorrow.
Lawrence's Ryan Kroeger hit a three-pointer to put the Vikings up by one in the final :30 seconds, but was quickly answered with a triple by Washington's Aaron Thompson to put the Bears back on top. Lawrence would get another chance as Kroeger was fouled in the double bonus, but the 2008 and 2009 MWC Player of the Year split the pair from the line. Washington would go on to make one of its two free throws, but a Viking lay-up for the tie was missed at the buzzer.
Free throw shooting plagued Lawrence throughout the game as it went 6-for-14 from the line. Thompson had a game-high 26 points for the Bears while teammate Zach Kelly finished with nine boards.
John Dekker went 5-for-7 from behind the arc to lead the Vikings with 17 points.
Jayce Apelgren finished with a team-hign nine rebounds to go along with his 15 points.

#2 Lawrence 88, #1 Grinnell 69 - Lawrence wins its second consecutive MWC Tournament Title and fifth of the last six as the second-seeded Vikings downed host Grinnell 88-69. Unable to overcome missing three-time Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year finalist David Arseneault, who missed his second straight game with a knee injury, Grinnell's offense looked out-of-sync, shooting under 28-percent for the game. It was close early until a 17-4 Viking run ended the half 45-30 in Lawrence's favor. The Pioneers would get no closer than 10 as foul trouble doomed them the entire game. Three Grinnell players would foul out while another three finished with four personals. The Vikings capitalized by going 46-for-58 from the line. Lawrence's Chris Page has been on a tear lately and continued that trend by leading the game in both points (27) and rebounds (19). John Dekker also chipped in 23 points for the Vikings while John Grotberg and Bobby Long led the way for the Pioneers with 21 and 19 points, respectively.
Lawrence has also won the conference's automatic berth to the 2009 NCAA Tournament where it hopes to avenge a first-round dismissal by Wheaton (IL) a year ago.

#2 Lawrence 90, #3 Carroll 66 - It took over three minutes for Lawrence to score its first bucket of the game, but after Jayce Apelgren's three-pointer, the Vikings went on a roll, finishing off Carroll 90-66. The Pioneers took an early 8-0 lead on a triple by Nate Zimmerman, but Lawrence went on an 11-2 run for its first lead of the game. The two teams would go back-and-forth until a jumper by Ryan Kroeger at the 11:23 mark of the first half gave the Vikings a lead that they would never surrender. Lawrence's Chris Page led all scorers with 27 while teammate John Dekker finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Carroll was led by Player of the Year candidate John Hoch's 24 points, but the loss of Sporting News Preseason All-American Wes Ladwig proved to be too much as the Pioneers end their season at 16-8. Lawrence will now take on Grinnell at 3 p.m. Saturday for the Tournament title and the automatic berth into the 2009 NCAA Tournament. In their lone match-up of the season, Grinnell downed the Vikings in Appleton 101-100.

#1 Grinnell 95, #4 St. Norbert 85 - In a game that saw 18 ties, Grinnell overcame the absence of Three-time Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year finalist David Arseneault to take down visiting St. Norbert 95-85. Arseneault, the nation's leader in assists, injured his knee in practice earlier in the week. The Green Knights took the first lead of the game on a lay-up by Tom Katzfey, but that was quickly erased by a John Grotberg three-pointer. The first period would see the scoreboard tied 11 times including at the half after a three-point buzzer beater by Grinnell's R.J. Roewe evened the score at 35. A Paul Mallers lay-up gave St. Norbert the advantage coming out of the break, but Bobby Long's triple at the 17:17 mark took the lead back again. There would be six more ties in the half until Matt Chalupa put the Pioneers up 77-75 with just over seven minutes left. The game would remain close, but Grinnell held on thanks in large part to Long's 33 points and Grotberg's 31.
Bryan Fleischmann
led the Green Knights with 22 points and nine rebounds. The Pioneers will now look to follow-up their Conference Championship with a Tournament title and the automatic berth into the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Standing in their way will be fellow Conference Champion Lawrence as the two teams are set to tipoff at 3 p.m. Saturday. In their lone match-up of the season, Grinnell downed the Vikings in Appleton 101-100.

Waukesha, Wis. – In a short time, Carroll University's David Schultz (right) turned the men's basketball program from abysmal to dominant. Schultz took over a team prior to the 2002-2003 season that was coming off a 2-21 campaign the year before. In just six-plus seasons Schultz reached the 100-win plateau when his Pioneers knocked Lawrence University on Jan. 7.
His team finished 7-16 in his inaugural campaign in 2002-2003 but since then Carroll has won at least 15 games a year and has never reached double digits in losses. The program's best season was 2006-2007 when the team finished 21-5 and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament.
Carroll has played in four of the last five Midwest Conference Tournament finals and won the tournament title in 2007.
Many "firsts" have been accomplished under Schultz's tenure, including first 21 win season, first MWC Tournament title, first NCAA Tournament appearance and first National ranking just to name a few.
Following Wednesday's win over Lawrence, Schultz has amassed a career record of 100-59 while at Carroll, including a 66-33 mark in the Midwest Conference. He is just the second men's basketball coach in Pioneers history to reach 100 wins and is second on the all-time win's list, trailing only Dave Fink's 133 wins from 1978-1992.
Schultz and the Pioneers will look to remain perfect in the MWC this season when they return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 10. Carroll hosts Beloit College at 4 p.m. |

Grotberg’s 36-point performance gave him 2,385 points for his career, surpassing Steve Wood’s total of 2,379. Grotberg had 25 points at halftime and tied Wood’s record with a 3-pointer at the 17:11 mark of the second half. Another trey at the 13:44 mark made Grotberg the school’s all-time leading scorer.

Waukesha, WI -- George Haas (right), an assistant coach for the Carroll University men's basketball team, will be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The WBCA is comprised of 3,100 members who coach at the high school or collegiate level.
"It's something I didn’t think about 30 years ago when I started coaching but now looking back it’s a great honor to go in with some of the great people that I learned from," said Haas. "Paul Nowak, Win Parkinson, Ray Rozek, Jim Rebholz, these were all real mentors. I'd like to thank all the parents and players over the years at Wauwatosa East as they are part of this honor. This is not an individual honor, it’s a group honor."
The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Marriott Hotel in Madison, Wis.
Haas, entering his second year on the staff of Pioneers head coach David Schultz, had a stellar 27-year career at Wauwatosa East High School coaching at both the junior varsity (13 years) and varsity (14 years) level.
"George is very deserving of this award. He has been involved in basketball in our state for a long time, contributing to the success of many teams and players along the way," said Schultz. "We are very happy to have him on our staff at Carroll."
Haas was a part of 482 wins overall at Wauwatosa East, including a 270-50 mark as the head varsity coach. During his tenure, East won 12 conference championships and advanced to the state tournament in 1997 and 2002. Haas has earned several conference coaching honors and was named Wisconsin's Coach of the Year in 2002.
Several former players under Haas have gone on to play collegiate basketball, while two went on to enjoy successful careers in the National Basketball Association – Tony Smith and Devin Harris. |

Joel DePagter's (right) Lawrence squad returned to the top of the Midwest Conference standings last season after a one-year hiatus the year before. They have been picked to finish in the lead again in the MWC Men’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll after receiving seven first-place votes of a possible nine. If the Vikings were to repeat, it will mark the fifth time in six seasons that they were able to do so.
Carroll and Grinnell are picked to finish second and third in the poll, respectively, but both teams have the talent to beat anyone in the country as well as the league. St. Norbert claimed the fourth-place spot which they finished in last year and will look to rebound from a one-point heartbreaking loss to Lawrence in the first-round of MWC Tournament. Two young, talented teams in Ripon and Monmouth hold the fifth- and sixth-place spots while Lake Forest edges Illinois College by two votes for seventh. Knox falls one vote short of eighth with Beloit taking the tenth and final spot.
