Tharp picks up Wisconsin coaching honor

APPLETON, Wis. -- Lawrence University men's basketball coach John Tharp was honored this past weekend in Madison as the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year.

Tharp led the Vikings to a 25-1 record, a No. 1 ranking, a third consecutive Midwest Conference championship, and to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2005-06.

"When you receive an award and its from the coaches in the state of Wisconsin, that's what is most meaningful," Tharp said. "It's a reflection of our coaching staff and our players. I'm just a part of it."

Tharp, who has coached the Vikings for 12 seasons, has a sterling record of 191-92, a .675 winning percentage. Over the past four seasons, the Vikings are 87-18 for an even more impressive .829 winning percentage.

"This is a well-deserved honor that naturally speaks to John's capabilities as a coach and program leader," Lawrence Director of Athletics Robert Beeman said. "We are proud of John and his staff for what they have achieved and pleased to see that the WBCA has chosen to formally recognize John's accomplishments."

Lawrence broke new ground in men's basketball last season when it went on a 25-game winning streak. The Vikings were the last undefeated team in the nation at level and held down the No. 1 ranking for a month.

The Vikings open their season Nov. 21 at Alexander Gymnasium when they host UW-Stevens Point, the 2004 and 2005 NCAA Division III champion. The Pointers knocked the Vikings out of the NCAA Division III Tournament in both of their championship seasons.
