St. Norbert Begins National Search For New Men's Basketball Coach
St. Norbert College athletics director Tim Bald announced on Monday, February 20th that a national search for a new head men’s basketball coach will begin immediately after Paul DeNoble's contract was not renewed.

DeNoble (right) completed his 17th season as the Green Knights men’s basketball coach this past Saturday in a 67-52 loss to Lawrence University . The Green Knights finished the 2005-06 season with a 7-16 overall record and a 5-11 mark in conference play.

During his tenure, DeNoble compiled a 185-200 overall record and qualified for the MWC Tournament in 1993, 1999 and 2002. St. Norbert played in the 2002 NCAA Division III Tournament and won the MWC title with a 16-0 mark in MWC play that season. DeNoble was also the women’s golf coach in the fall of 2005 after serving as men’s golf coach for 12 seasons.

Lawrence Captures Third Straight MWC Championship On Bradley Buzzer-Beater
John Tharp’s (right) No.2 Lawrence squad needed every second to capture its 64-63 victory over No. 14 Carroll on Wednesday (Feb. 15) evening in Waukesha, Wis., as the Vikings Keven Bradley (below left) scored on a runner in the lane as time expired to lift LU’s record to 21-0 overall and 15-0 in Midwest Conference play. The win also gave Lawrence its third consecutive MWC Men’s Basketball Championship and hosting duties for next weekend’s MWC Tournament (Feb. 24-25). LU joins Beloit (1945-51, 1980-83) and Carleton (1927-33) as the only school’s in the 84-year history of MWC men’s basketball to win three consecutive conference crowns.

Carroll will enter the MWC Tournament as the No. 2 seed regardless of the outcome of its game on Saturday, when the Pioneers travel to Beloit. Lawrence hosts St. Norbert in its regular-season finale Saturday, as LU looks to remain the only remaining unbeaten team in any level of men’s collegiate basketball and become the fourth team in MWC history to finish the regular-season 16-0. The winner of the MWC Tournament earns the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

The Lawrence women were unable to hang on to first-place in the conference, as the Lady Pioneers ran away with a 72-49 victory earlier in the night. The win lifts Carroll into a three-way tie with St. Norbert and Lawrence, with all three teams entering the final day of the regular-season with 12-3 marks in league play. Something will have to give when Lawrence faces St. Norbert this Saturday (Feb. 18). Complete women’s tournament scenarios will be available on the MWC website tomorrow.

MWC Tournament Scenarios/MWC Championship Battle Between No. 2 Lawrence No. 14 Carroll
Wednesday’s game between No. 2 Lawrence and No. 14 Carroll in Waukesha, Wis., will not only be the season’s most imperative in regards to home-court advantage for the MWC Tournament, but it will also be a historical contest in terms of national implications.

The Pioneers rise from No. 22 to No. 14 in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll marks the first time that two MWC teams ranked in the Top 15 in the country will face off head-to-head. The only other time two MWC squads appeared in the Top 15 in the D3hoops.com poll at the same time was for one week during the 2004-05 season, when Lawrence was ranked #10 and Ripon #11.

MWC teams ranked in the Top 25 in the D3hoops.com poll have only played three times in the polls seven-season history. The results…

2003-04 SEASON
at #8 Lawrence 125, #21 Grinnell 111 (Regular-season)

2004-05 SEASON
at #11 Lawrence 81, #20 Ripon 69 (Regular-season)
at #15 Lawrence 82, #22 Ripon 77 (OT) (MWC Tournament Championship Game)

HOSTING RIGHTS
A Lawrence (14-0 MWC) victory on Wednesday secures the MWC Championship and tourney hosting duties for the Vikings. If Carroll (13-1) beats Lawrence and both teams are victorious on the final day of the regular-season (Saturday, Feb. 18), then the teams will be named MWC Co-Champions. All of the possible tiebreakers would also be cancelled out and hosting duties would be decided by a coin flip. If Carroll wins Wednesday and both teams lose Saturday, Lawrence will host the tourney.

FOURTH & FINAL
Knox (8-6) controls its own fate in its bid for the fourth and final MWC tourney spot. The Prairie Fire’s two remaining contests are at Grinnell on Wednesday and at home against Illinois College on Saturday. A Knox win or a Beloit loss punches Knox’s postseason ticket. Beloit (6-8) remains the long-shot for the league tourney, as the Bucs hold the tiebreaker over Knox, but need home wins over Ripon and No. 14 Carroll coupled with a pair of Knox losses to get in.

THREE SEED
Grinnell (9-5) has already clinched an MWC tourney berth and will secure the No. 3 seed with a home win over Knox or a road win over Lake Forest in either of its final two games of the regular-season. If Knox and Grinnell both finish 9-7, then Knox will be the No. 3 seed, as the Prairie Fire would then hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Pioneers.

Lawrence's Braier & Monmouth's Hebeler Named Academic All-District

Hebeler (left) has been solid all-around player for Monmouth this season, ranking third on the team in scoring (11.3 ppg) and fourth in rebounds (4.7 rpg), while leading the Scots in assists (72) and steals (21). A three-time Dean’s List recipient, Hebeler hit 12 three-pointers en route to 38 points in a win over Aurora earlier this season. His 12 treys rank third among single-game three-point marks in NCAA DIII in 2005-06.

Braier and Hebeler will now be placed on the national ballot for the ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA Academic All-American Team. Only first team All-District selections are included on the national ballot.

Hinz Ties NCAA Single-Game Rebound Mark
Days after becoming Beloit 's career leader in points and rebounds, senior forward Josh Hinz padded his career leads with a historic effort during the Bucs 120-112 win over Grinnell on Feb. 4. Hinz recorded 50 points and 36 rebounds in the contest, tying the NCAA Division III single-game rebound record, which was established by Calvin’s Mark Veenstra in 1976 and equaled by Methodist's Clinton Montford in 1989. Hinz's 50 points was the highest tally in Flood Arena history, but the 6-6 All-American fell just short of breaking his own personal scoring mark after a 55-point effort against the Pioneers during the 2003-04 season.

Historic Hoops Season Garners National Press For Third-Ranked Lawrence Men
The Lawrence men’s basketball team is now the only remaining undefeated team in all of college basketball following losses by Division I Duke, Florida and Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Vikings moved to 14-0 overall and 8-0 in MWC play after a 79-68 road victory over St. Norbert Saturday. The Vikings moved up two spots to the No. 3 ranking in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and received first-place votes on two ballots. The ranking is the highest ever by an MWC team in the D3hoops.com poll and Lawrence is also the first MWC team to receive a first-place vote.

The Vikings, who are two-time defending MWC champs, have won 14 straight games at home and are off to the best start in school history. Their recent status as the nation’s only remaining unbeaten has garnered national attention from ESPN’s College Basketball GameNight and USA Today.

“Since Sunday was a day off for us, it’s ok for our guys to take this moment and enjoy it. It’s pretty neat for our players since they’ve worked so hard to get here,” Lawrence head coach Jon Tharp (pictured) told USA Today in the January 24th edition.

No. 25 Carroll (12-2, 6-1), whose second loss of the season came at Lawrence (86-81) last week, entered the Top 25 for the first time this season in the Jan. 23 poll. Wittenberg (16-1) is the top-ranked team in the D3hoops.com poll with 15 first-place nods, followed by Wooster (16-1), who received eight tallies as the top team in DIII.
