This is the second consecutive season the Vikings have an exhibition game against a Division I opponent. Lawrence lost 89-55 to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, who went on to the play in the Sweet 16, in an exhibition game on Nov. 10, 2004.

2005 Midwest Conference Men's Basketball Tournament Preview

It all seems very familiar for the 2005 Midwest Conference (MWC) Tournament.

Lawrence University is again the conference champion and hosting the event, and two of the other three participants were in Appleton for the tourney last February. Carroll College and Lake Forest College return to the tournament for the second straight year, but the newcomer earning an invitation to this party is a recognizable group in Ripon College, a perennial participant.

The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, which begins first-round action on March 3.

Lawrence, conference champions for the second consecutive season and the top seed, look to repeat as tournament champions as well. Lawrence clinched the title with two games left and earned the right to host before playing the regular-season finale at Carroll.

The Vikings, who advanced farther in the 2004 NCAA Division III Tournament than any team in MWC history, have another balanced squad this season. Lawrence, nationally ranked all season and checking in at No. 15 this week, is led by reigning MWC Player of the Year and All-American Chris Braier. The junior forward leads his team in scoring (14.5 ppg), rebounding (11.5 rpg), steals (33), and blocks (11.).

Lawrence also is strong on the perimeter with senior guard Jason Holinbeck (13.1 ppg) and senior forward Brendan Falls (10.5 ppg). Running the show for the Vikings is standout point guard Dan Evans (9.3 ppg, 3.5 apg). Forward Kyle MacGillis (11.2 ppg) is Lawrence's super sixth man. Lawrence will flex its depth with seniors Brett Sjoberg and Tony Olson, juniors Ben Klekamp and Keven Bradley, and freshmen Ben Rosenblatt and Andy Hurley all playing key reserve roles.

The Vikings face No. 4 seed Carroll, which snapped a five-game losing streak to Lawrence last Saturday. The Pioneers bring a talented group to the tourament. Lawrence defeated the Pioneers 80-72 in Appleton back on Jan. 18.

Carroll, which lost to Lawrence 82-71 in the tournament championship game last season, relies heavily on its starting five. The Pioneers’ starters, which account for more 75.6 percent of their scoring, are paced by senior forward Ben Hickethier at 15.1 points per game. Junior forward Jason Scheper is second in scoring (14.4 ppg) and first in rebounding (6.3 rpg). Sharpshooters Nathan Drury (12.6 ppg) and Paul Toshner (11.3 ppg) are joined by an outstanding point guard in James Johnson (4.7 apg).

No. 2 seed Ripon returns to the tournament after a one-year absence. Ripon won the tournament three straight years from 1998-2000 and again in 2002. The Red Hawks, nationally ranked this week at No. 22, are triggered by standout guard Tom Becker. The senior is averaging 20.9 points per game and 4.5 assists per contest. He also paces the team with 61 steals. Becker is joined in the backcourt by sophomore David McMullen (11.4 ppg) to form an imposing pair on the perimeter.

Sophomore forward Bo Johnson (18.5 ppg) also is most comfortable on the outside and has attempted almost twice as many 3-pointers as anyone else on the team. Ripon’s inside play comes from sophomore center Brian Schmitting (10.9 ppg), who leads the team in rebounding (5.5 rpg) and blocks (17).

No. 3 seed Lake Forest College has one of the top inside duos in the league in junior forward Franklyn Beckford (13.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg) and senior forward Eric McDonald (12.8 rpg, 5.2 rpg). These two players lead the team in scoring and rebounding and are shooting a combined 57.4 percent from the floor.

The Foresters also can get it done from the outside. Pay too much attention to Beckford and McDonald, and you may quickly find yourself stung by the perimeter shooting of Greg Klos (12.1 ppg) and Dodd Browning (8.0 ppg). (Submitted by Lawrence University Sports Info)

2004-05 Men's Pre-season Coaches' Poll

In the annual pre-season poll of all ten MWC men’s basketball coaches, Lawrence was the favorite to finish atop the standings for the 2004-2005 season with nine first place votes. The Vikings will be vying for consecutive league titles after making it to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 last season.

Carroll had the remaining first place vote and edged out Lake Forest in the voting for second place. While the Pioneers have never won a championship title, the Foresters last won the crown during the 1999-2000 season.

The MWC coaches gave St. Norbert the nod to finish in fourth and qualify for the 2004 MWC Tournament, just ahead of Ripon in fifth. Grinnell and Illinois C. finished sixth and seventh respectively, while Beloit, Monmouth, and Knox rounded out the league predictions.

The regular season winner in the 16-game modified round-robin schedule is declared the conference champion and the tournament winner receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
