Week #1 : September 8, 2009
Offensive
Rob Berger - Quarterback - St. Norbert College
Junior - Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake


St. Norbert junior quarterback Rob Berger set a St. Norbert record with 443 yards of total offense in a 42-35 overtime win over No. 17 Wartburg. Berger passes for 317 yards, completing a school-record 28 passes on 37 attempts with four touchdowns and no interceptions. His 8-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Gezella on the final play of regulation forced overtime. Berger rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts, making him the first player in St. Norbert history to pass for 300 yards and rush for 100 yards in the same game.
Defensive

Tony Baratti - Linebacker - Beloit College
Junior - Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect

Had six tackles, 3 solo, with 2.0 sacks for 10 yards, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, and an interception he returned for 7 yards as Beloit defeated MacMurray College 39-22 in the season opener on Saturday.

Special Teams

Kurt Roeder – Punter - Ripon College
Junior - Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam

Roeder punted the ball seven times for an average of 40.9 yards per punt during Saturday’s 40-16 loss to UW-Oshkosh. Three of his seven punts were kicked inside the 20-yard line, which included a long of 52 yards.

Week #2 : September 14, 2009
Offensive

Mitch Niekamp - Quarterback- Illinois College
Senior - Camp Point Ill./Camp Point Central

Niekamp tied his Illinois College single-game record for touchdown passes when he threw six scoring aerials in the Blueboys’ 42-24 come-from-behind win over Knox College on September 12. After tossing his first TD pass in the first half, Niekamp directed five consecutive scoring drives during the third and fourth quarters and rallied the visitors from a 24-21 deficit with 21 unanswered points. His touchdown passes covered 5, 28 and 10 yards to Michael Jennings, 13 yards to Colin Duling and 14 yards to Kevin Wallace. For the day, Niekamp completed 18 of 30 passes for 231 yards and one interception.

Defensive

Ryan Fletcher - Linebacker - Grinnell College
Junior - Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central


Fletcher played a big part in allowing the Pioneers to nearly knock off highly-touted St. Norbert College on Saturday. He had 2.5 sacks, including one that forced a fumble which resulted in a Grinnell field goal. Fletcher also had seven tackles and two pass breakups.

Logan Krueger - Wide Receiver - St. Norbert
Sophomore - Denmark, Wis.


Krueger returned three kickoffs for 106 yards in St. Norbert's 14-11 win over Grinnell. Krueger had kickoff returns of 41, 45 and 20 yards in the game, with his 45-yarder giving St. Norbert the ball at the Grinnell 49 to open the second half and set up the Green Knights' second touchdown for a 14-3 lead.

Offensive

Alex Tanney - Quarterback - Monmouth College
Junior - Lexington, Ill./Lexington


Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney took just three minutes of Saturday’s 58-0 win over Beloit to set the Fighting Scots career touchdown pass record. Tanney’s 5-yard toss to Mike Blodgett broke Rob Purlee’s career TD mark of 83 set from 2000-03. The score capped an eight-play, 94-yard drive. The junior connected for two more TDs on the day, giving him 86 for his career with more than a season and a half to play. Tanney, who played just one series in the second half, finished the game with 283 yards on 27-of-36 (75%) passing for a pass efficiency rating of 168.53. It was Tanney’s third consecutive game this season passing for 200-plus yards and the 14 straight overall.

Defensive
D.J. Jackson - Defensive Back - Illinois College
Senior - Webster Groves, MO./Webster Groves


Senior defensive back D.J. Jackson of Illinois College played a prominent role Saturday in the Blueboys' 21-7 victory over visiting Lake Forest College. He intercepted a Foresters' pass at his own one-yard line and raced 77 yards before being tackled at the visitors' 22-yard line. That turnover put the Blueboys in position to score the game's first touchdown. Jackson finished the day with five solo tackles (including two stops behind the line of scrimmage) and three assists. He also broke up a pass. On special teams, Jackson had two kickoff returns for 68 yards (including one return for 46), and three punt returns for 15 yards.

Matt Frelich - Defensive End - Lawrence University
Senior - Maribel, Wis./Denmark

Frelich blocked his first kick of the season and the sixth of his career in Lawrence's 45-3 loss to St. Norbert. Frelich blocked Rob Berger's punt to give Lawrence a first down at the Lawrence 44-yard line. Frelich, who blocked four kicks in the 2007 season and missed nearly all of last season due to injury, finished the game with five tackles.

Week #4 : September 28, 2009
Offensive
Brian Maughn - Quarterback - Beloit College
Sophomore - Sunrise, Fla./Western
 
Maughn tied a Beloit record with 373 yards passing in leading the Bucs over Knox College 42-14 in Galesburg on Saturday.  He was 20-28 with an interception and two TDs.  His long pass was a 58-yard scoring toss to Andrew Christensen 19 seconds into the second half to give Beloit a 21-7 lead.  Maughn has thrown for 200-plus yards in three of Beloit's four games this season and his five touchdown passes are one short of the six total the Bucs had in the entire 2008 season.
Defensive

Ryan Andersen – Linebacker - Ripon College
Senior -
Racine, Wis./St. Catherine’s

Andersen led the Red Hawk defense to its second consecutive shutout Saturday, defeating Illinois College 14-0. Andersen, who has led Ripon in tackles every game this season, recorded a team-best eight tackles (five solo) against the Blueboys, two of which went for a loss. Andersen also recorded 1.5 sacks and broke up two passes.

Andrew Christensen, - Running Back/Wide Receiver - Beloit College
Junior - Janesville, Wis./Milton
 
Christensen had a career day in Beloit's 42-14 win over Knox on Saturday, running up 326 total yards and scoring a school-record tying four touchdowns.  He had 107 yards on five punt returns, including a 69-yard punt return for the Bucs' first touchdown.  He also had 53 yards in kickoff returns, including a long of 29.  He rushed three times for 15 yards and two TDs and caught seven passes for 151 yards and a 58-yard touchdown.

Offensive
Julian Ross - Wide Receiver - Beloit College
Junior - Oak Forest, Ill.


In Saturday's 29-22 win over Lake Forest College, Ross had ten catches for 187 yards and a 69-yard touchdown.  The 187 yards was just two yards short of the all-time Beloit single-game record of 189 yards receiving set by All-American tight end Mike Meteyard against Carroll in 1994.  Seven of Ross' receptions went for 12-yards plus and three of the ten were third down conversions.
Defensive
Matt Frelich - Defensive End - Lawrence University
Senior - Maribel, Wis./Denmark

Frelich turned in a huge performance in Lawrence's 35-19 loss to Illinois College. Frelich had a season-high eight tackles, including seven solo, and included in that total were 3.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. He also scored his first career touchdown when he dropped into coverage, intercepted a Mitch Niekamp pass near the sideline and raced untouched 13 yards for the score. Frelich also recorded two pass breakups, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

Matt Batton - Kicker - Monmouth College
Freshman - Peoria, Ill./Richwoods


Batton had a day to remember in Saturday’s 59-0 win over Grinnell. The backup kicker came on in the second half to handle the kickoff chores, and averaged more than 60-yards per kick, but the highlight came on offense. Kicking into a rainy cross wind, Batton nailed a school-record 51-yard field goal with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter. The kick easily surpassed the 46-yard record of current Fighting Scots kicking coach Nate Palkovic set in just two years ago.

Alex Tanney - Quarterback - Monmouth College
Junior - Lexington, Ill./Lexington


Tanney continued to rewrite the record books in a 52-24 win over previously unbeaten St. Norbert Saturday. The junior threw for 361 yards to give him 8,188 passing yards in his career. With a season-and-a-half remaining in his career, Tanney surpassed Rob Purlee (8,017 yards from
2000-03) as the Fighting Scots’ all-time leader in passing yardage. He connected for five aerial scores to five different receivers and completed 34-of-47 attempts (72%) with one interception and a pass efficiency rating of 167.71. Playing in his 28^th career game, Tanney scored his first collegiate touchdown on a quarterback sneak with 8:44 left in the third quarter to put the Scots up 45-17. For the year, Monmouth’s QB has completed over 70 percent of his passes for 1,886 yards and 23 TDs with just two interceptions for a rating of 166.80.
Defensive
Marquis Bradley - Strong Safety - Grinnell College
Junior - Wichita, Kan./Independence


Bradley played a huge role in the Pioneers’ 27-12 victory at Knox College on Saturday. He forced two fumbles in the first 1:46 of the contest, the first which he returned for a 27-yard touchdown at the 13:23 mark of the first period. On the ensuing kickoff, he forced another that led to a Grinnell touchdown two plays later. For the game, he led the team with 16 tackles including 4.5 for loss.
Special Teams

Tim Nass - Wide Receiver - Carroll University
Freshman - Brookfield, Wis./Central

Nass broke the game wide open when he returned an Illinois College punt 55 yards for a touchdown at 9:40 of the third quarter in Carroll’s 34-14 win over the Blueboys. Nass, a wide receiver, also added three receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown reception from Chris Casper.

Week #7 : October 19, 2009
Offensive
Brian Maughn - Quarterback - Beloit College
Sophomore - Sunrise, Fla./Western
 
In a 50-42 shootout loss at Illinois College on Saturday, Maughn threw for a school-record 423 yards on 27-37 passing with three touchdowns and an interception.  The 27 completions were also a school record.  He now stands just 23 yards away from breaking the single-season passing yardage record.  Included in his TD passes were a 66 and 65-yarder.
Defensive

Marcus Ruff - Linebacker - Monmouth College
Junior - Avon, Ill./Bushnell-Prairie City

Monmouth College linebacker Marcus Ruff led the defensive charge in a 35-13 win over Ripon as the Fighting Scots took over sole possession of first place in the Midwest Conference. The junior started the game with a bang, recovering a Red Hawk fumble at the Ripon 16-yard line to set up Monmouth’s first score. Ruff when on to record 16 tackles, including 12 solos, and broke up two passes. His 16 tackles in the game was more than half his season total.

Special Teams

Jacob Gahart - Kicker - Ripon College
Freshman - Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn

Gahart made 2 of 3 field goals during Saturday’s 35-13 loss to Monmouth College. All three of his attempts came from over 40 yards, converting from 42 and a career-long 47 yards.

Week #8 : October 26, 2009
Offensive
Julian Ross - Wide Receiver - Beloit College
Junior - Oak Forest, Ill.

In a 44-14 win over Lawrence, Ross caught seven passes for 186 yards and a school record-tying three touchdowns. He had TD catches of 81, 8 and 55 in the game. His three TD catches marked the third time in Beloit history a player has had three receiving TDs, the first time since 1990.
It was also his third game this season with 186 yards or more in receiving yardage. For the season he has 46 receptions for 844 yards and six touchdowns, leaving him just 14 receptions, 96 yards and two TDs short of equally the single-season record in each category.

Defensive
Anthony Goranson - Defensive End - Monmouth College
Senior - Bartlett, Ill./Belvidere


Monmouth College defensive end Anthony Goranson played a big part in shutting down the Lake Forest offense in the Fighting Scots’ 51-14 win over the Foresters Saturday. The senior stuffed the Foresters with eight tackles, including 4.5 tackles for loss and three sacks for 20 yards. Goranson leads the team with six sacks for 46 yards and 14.5 tackles for loss for 74 yards. He is tied for fifth with 40 total tackles. With the win, Monmouth maintains sole possession of first place in the Midwest Conference.
Special Teams

Andrew Pfeiffer - Tight End/Punter - Illinois College
Senior - Winchester, Ill.

Pfeiffer enjoyed his best day punting the ball in the Blueboys’ 55-34 win over Grinnell. He averaged 40.8 yards on five punts, and had his best kick travel 53 yards. Grinnell’s average starting field position for the game was their own 27-yard line, and Pfeiffer’s punts were instrumental in pinning the visitors deep in their own territory.

Offensive
Alex Tanney - Quarterback - Monmouth College
Junior - Lexington, Ill./Lexington


Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney broke his own single-game passing record in Saturday’s 44-17 win over Illinois College as the Fighting Scots clinched no worse than a share of the Midwest Conference title. The junior signal caller passed for 437 yards, breaking his previous record of 405 yards set his freshman year. Tanney completed 33 of 46 passes with three touchdowns and one interception against the Blue Boys for an efficiency rating of 168.71. With more than a season left, he has thrown for a school-record 9,346 yards and 110 TDs, including 36 scores and 3,044 yards this season.
Defensive

Calvin Zirkle - Defensive Back - Knox College
Junior - Kankakee, Ill./Bishop McNamara

Zirkle was the main factor in shutting down Lake Forest’s high powered passing attack, as he constantly covered the Forester’s top receivers all day, breaking up five passes in the process and making 3 tackles. In doing so Zirkle led a defensive back core that limited a Lake Forest team, coming into the game averaging over 200 yards of passing a game, to only 93 yards and helped the Prairie Fire force five interceptions in a 12-7 win for the Prairie Fire’s first of the season.

Special Teams

Jacob Gahart - Kicker - Ripon College
Freshman - Elkhorn, Wis./Elkhorn


With a 31-yard field goal early in the second quarter of Saturday’s
38-17 win at Grinnell, Jacob Gahart broke Ripon’s school record for
most field goals in a single season, connecting on his ninth of the
season.

Week #10 : November 9, 2009
Offensive

Matt Shepherd - Wide Receiver - Monmouth College
Junior - Leesburg, Fla./Leesburg


Monmouth College receiver Matt Shepherd scored three second half touchdowns in the Fighting Scots’ 42-0 win over Knox Saturday in the 121st meeting of the two teams. The junior recorded a game-high 14 receptions and gained 141 yards as Monmouth’s offense came alive in the final 30 minutes. For the year, Shepherd has caught 90 passes for 948 yards and nine TDs.

 

Defensive

Dan Sjoquist - Defensive Back - St. Norbert College
Sophomore - Kingsford, Mich.

Sjoquist led St. Norbert to its second consecutive shutout with a 49-0 win over Illinois College, the first time the Green Knights have ended the season with consecutive shutouts since 1952.
Sjoquist had a team-high seven tackles, including 1.5 for a loss, and had two passes defensed as the Blueboys passed for just 60 yards.

Special Teams

Anthony Garetto - Linebacker/Punter - Lake Forest College
Junior - Orland Park, Ill.

Garetto averaged 39.0 yards on 10 punts in Lake Forest’s 9-3 loss at Carroll on Saturday. Five of his boots exceeded 40 yards and six of them were unable to be returned. He also added five tackles and a fumble recovery on defense.


Week #11 : November 16, 2009
Offensive
Nick Maxam - Quarterback - Lawrence University
Senior - Appleton, Wis./East


Nick Maxam completed 11 of 18 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns in Lawrence’s 21-17 nonconference victory at Minnesota-Morris this past Saturday. Maxam hit on three third-and-long situations for all three of Lawrence’s scores. He connected with Nate Nelson on a 61-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter to give Lawrence a 7-0 lead. He then hit Jeremiah Johnson on a 12-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to put the Vikings up 14-10. Maxam then converted a third-and-30 when he hit Nelson with a 48-yard scoring pass that gave Lawrence the lead for good at 21-17. The three touchdown passes ties Maxam’s career high.
Defensive
Brian Janssen - Safety - Lawrence University
Senior - Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon


Brian Janssen made a game-saving interception in the final seconds in Lawrence’s 21-17 nonconference victory at Minnesota-Morris this past Saturday. Janssen intercepted Morris quarterback Derrick Foss at the Lawrence 5-yard line on a second-and-goal play, and that allowed Lawrence to hold on for the victory. Janssen added seven tackles, including a tackle for loss, to go along with his second interception of the season. The Lawrence defense stopped Morris three times inside the Vikings’ 15-yard line in the final seven minutes.
 
Special Teams

Nate Nelson - Wide Receiver - Lawrence University
Freshman - Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca


Nate Nelson had a great day punting and catching the football for Lawrence in the Vikings’ 21-17 nonconference victory at Minnesota-Morris this past Saturday. Nelson punted six times for an average of 40.8 yards per kick, and he had a long punt of 60 yards. He also pinned  the Cougars inside their 20 twice. Nelson’s performance on Saturday ensured he would break the Lawrence season record for punting average. Nelson averaged 44.5 yards per punt this season, breaking the mark of 42.8 set by Ed Grosse in 1953. As a wide receiver, Nelson caught four passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns, which were catches of 61 and 48 yards.
