Ripon was a strong candidate for second place while Grinnell finished third in the balloting, Beloit was a close fourth and Carroll rounded out the top five. Knox and Lake Forest finished tied for sixth followed by Monmouth, Lawrence and Illinois College.

    2000 MWC Football Preview

    Beloit College
Senior Scott Dvorak will be joined by junior Scott Muehlemann and sophomore Ty Mueller to form the strongest trio of backs in the MWC. Together these three helped the Bucs win the team rushing title in '99 as they averaged 260 yards per game. All three ranked among the top 13 rushers in the league while scoring 22 touchdowns between them. Wingback Nate Edwards also adds to the threat of the ground game after leading Beloit with ten scores last season. Second team All-MWC defensive back Jim Kostiha was second in the league in interceptions with five, and will join his sophomore brother Joe who will anchor the Buc's linebackers. Head Coach Ed DeGeorge will need to replace the top field goal kicker in the conference, James Collins, who was a senior last season.

    Carroll College
Head Coach Merle Masonholder sports one of the league's top defensive units year after year and returns with 1999's second-ranked squad that surrendered 326 yards a game. The Pioneers were second in both passing defense and rushing defense. Carroll also sports one of the MWC's most productive and exciting returners in Jim Sorenson. Sorenson was a first team All-MWC pick after finishing second in kickoff returns and punt returns in '99. Carroll finished last in the league in total offense last year but return a pair of solid receivers in Erik Gehrke and Ted Starck along with running back Jason Bryan. Quarterback will be an area of concern for Carroll as they try to replace Eric Block after leading the MWC in pass attempts with 376 last season.

    Grinnell College
Gone is Troy Dougherty, one of Division III's top quarterbacks for the past four years, but returning is a very strong candidate in Shawn Sigler Preseason All-American candidate Jeff Pedersen will try to improve on his conference-best 13 touchdowns from last season. Pedersen will be joined by wide receiver Matt Roberts and flanker Andy Eagan who both finished ranked in the top 12 receivers in the MWC along with Pedersen who was second. Matt Amendt, the league's top quarterback sacker, is gone, but linebacker Brad Ruhoff and defensive back Matt Johnston will try to lead the Pioneers defense back to the top of the league after finishing seventh in total yards. First-team All-MWC kicker Nate Solmose leaves a special teams hole for Head Coach Greg Wallace to fill.

    Illinois College
Heading into his third season, Head Coach Tom Rowland will look towards the offensive combo of Patrick Bowman at running back and Dane Wear at flanker to propel his Blue Boys into the ranks of the MWC elite. Bowman ran over the MWC last season at clip of 127 yards per game with a season-best 1143 yards. Wear is a triple-threat with the ball as a receiver and kick and punt returner. In '99 Wear was ninth in the MWC in receiving, third in kickoff returns and fourth in punt returns. Nolan Leever joins Wear at receiver to create a formidable duo. Derek Leonard will add stability to the fifth-ranked offense as he calls the signals from quarterback again this year. Ryan Pulver, Bobby Noll and Karl Danner form the line on a defense that finished last in the MWC rankings.

    Knox College
Adam Buckley will be looking for his new target this season, Adam Wherley, after tremendous success with Vince Annel who was a senior last year. Buckley is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the loop after finishing fourth in passing efficiency last season thanks to a league-leading 211 completions, 82 of which were hauled in by Annel who led the MWC in catches with 9.1 per game. Head Coach Andy Gibbons also has to replace Drew Sherman, the third-ranked running back in the league who was also in his final season. Sherman was a workhorse for the Prairie Fire, logging 244 carries and scoring 13 touchdowns. Knox's defense will try to overcome a league-high 237 yards rushing per game from '99 with the help of defensive back Brandon Orr.

    Lake Forest College
First-year Head Coach Chad Eisele inherits some question marks at key positions in his inaugural season. The Foresters have big shoes to fill with the loss of quarterback Tom Dranger and running back Tyrome Bembry. Jim Smith will be the featured back this season along with Jason Ardendsee. Lake Forest finished in a last-place tie in passing offense with Beloit College last season as each team logged 103 yards per game. Kicker Pat Dunne will be another weapon offensively for the Foresters after finishing fourth in the league in kick scoring with five points per game. Eisele will have very good core of defensive players returning, including a veteran backfield with Tim Lewis, Rick Fender and Tim Pentz who recorded four interceptions in '99.

    Lawrence University
Winners of three of their last four games in '99, no MWC teams besides leaders St. Norbert and Grinnell finished the season out as well as the Vikings. Dave Brown, in his second season, has his team airing it out after years of top rankings in the league's rushing leaders. The Vikings 100 yards per game was second-to-last in the league ahead of Carroll. Quarterback Steve Wesley posted a fine 118.0 rating last season but will have to find a replacement for his favorite target Stacy Seidl who was a senior last season. J.C. Radliff will most likely get the nod at running back and tight end Chris McGinley is one to watch on offense. Linebacker Jeff Divjak is coming off one of the finest first seasons by a rookie in league history. Divjak led the fourth-ranked Viking defense with 157 total tackles.

    Monmouth College
The Fighting Scots will boast the league's other first-year coach this season in Steve Bell. Bell will look to kickstart a Monmouth squad that finished ninth in team defense and seventh in offense last year in MWC action. The offense will again rely on the arm and legs of quarterback Jon Baikie who notched a respectable 109.4 efficiency rating while rushing for 61.7 yards per game. Baikie also averaged 34.6 yards per punt. The rest of the Fighting Scot backfield also returns with fullback Preston Eiler and running back Randy Terrell who combined for 123.6 yards per game. Tobias Dickerson and Brian Valentini will be the mainstays of the Monmouth defensive line and hope to bolster a squad that lost two second-team All-MWC picks as seniors last season.

    Ripon College
Based on wins and winning percentage no team was more successful in the '90's than the Red Hawks, but Head Coach Ron Ernst is entering a new decade without some of his big playmakers. Gone is record-setting receiver Joe Rettler from last season and kicker Mike Grant from two years ago. Running back Troy DeVoe took over much of the scoring load in '99 leading the league in that department with 16 touchdowns, or 10.7 points per game and was second with 122.3 rushing yards per contest. Wide receiver Jason Beck may become the go-to-guy for either Brock Bauer or Griffin Prochnow at quarterback. Senior Nate Kok was the top kickoff return man in conference play last season. Josh Heisler was a second-team All-MWC pick and third in the MWC in tackles with 111.

    St. Norbert College
Head Coach Jim Purtill certainly made a name for himself in just his first season last year. Purtill took the Green Knights unscathed through the rugged MWC schedule and had Augustana College on the ropes in the first round of the NCAA playoffs before falling in the final minute. Gone is the glue to that championship team, quarterback and 1999 MWC Offensive MVP Tim Pierret. Sophomore running back Jason Augustynowicz will lead the league's top-ranked offense along with Matt O'Grady. The two combined for nearly 140 yards per game in '99. Preseason All-American pick Jeremiah Janssen heads up the MWC top-ranked defense. Janssen recorded over one sack per game for the Green Knights who lost their top two tacklers, Jason Piurkowski and Josh Gehl.
