FOR IMMEDIATE RELASE

GRINNELL, Iowa Max Hawsey has been named the new head football coach at Grinnell College.

Hawsey, who will also serve as assistant track and field coach, replaces Greg Wallace. Wallace gave up the football post after 20 years to concentrate on his new duties as director of athletics and recreation.

Hawsey comes from Colorado College, where he has served as offensive coordinator, offensive line coach, strength and conditioning coordinator and supervisor of the school’s weight room and fitness center since 2003. Prior to that he was an assistant football coach at his alma mater, Austin College in Texas, for six years. He also coached track and field at Austin College, plus has served as a head track and field coach at the high school level.

“I’m very pleased that we landed an exciting new football coach from a very strong pool of candidates,” said Grinnell College President Russell K. Osgood.

“I am thrilled to have Max Hawsey as our new head football coach,” added Wallace. “His experience as a Division III All-American football player, coach and teacher at Austin College and an offensive coordinator and certified strength and conditioning specialist at Colorado College will serve the football team, physical education department, and entire college community well in the coming years. It is an exciting time for Grinnell College football.”

Hawsey is excited for his new venture. “The first thing that drew me to Grinnell College was the outstanding academic reputation,” said Hawsey. “I’m honored to be named head coach at such a prestigious school. I’ve had the fortune of being at some other great schools like Austin and Colorado College, and I feel that has prepared me for this job. Grinnell feels like the perfect fit and I am looking forward to it.”

In his time at Colorado College, Hawsey coached an All-America quarterback and helped the team break 15 offensive school records. In the past two seasons, Colorado College has averaged more than 30 points and 400 yards per game. As a player at Austin College, Hawsey was a first-team all-conference performer at outside linebacker twice. He served as team captain and was voted most valuable player his senior year while also earning second-team All-America honors at defensive end.

Hawsey is optimistic about the upcoming football campaign since the Pioneers return many experienced players. “I had the opportunity to meet with a number of players and I enjoyed their attitude and character,” he said. “You mix those players in with a good recruiting class and I think we can win some games next season and eventually compete for the conference championship.”

Hawsey says he won’t hesitate to consult Wallace on any issue. “It’s a great benefit for someone like me, as a first-time head coach, to have someone like Greg Wallace on campus,” said Hawsey. “He knows the ins and outs of Grinnell College and Grinnell athletics. I will certainly utilize his expertise any way I can. That will be a huge plus for me.”

Hawsey and his wife, Sara, have two daughters, 4-year-old Marion and newborn Natalie, and a son, 3-year-old Hunter.
