Week #1 : September 8 , 2002

Offensive


Ryan Hartman
St. Norbert

Hartman, a senior quarterback from Appleton, Wis., completed 27-of-39 passes for 296 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions in the Green Knights’ win over 20th-ranked St. Thomas.

Defensive


Ted Serafini
Beloit

Serafini, a sophomore defensive back from Fayetteville, Ark., tallied nine tackles, one sack, two pass deflections, and two interceptions in the victory over Macalester.

Special Teams


Chris Griffin
St. Norbert

Griffin, a junior kicker from Oneida, Wis., made all five extra points in the win over nationally ranked St. Thomas. Of the junior’s six kickoffs, four were touchbacks.


Week #2 : September 15 , 2002

Offensive


Mike Erwin
Knox

Erwin, a senior quarterback from Kent, Ill., (Pearl City HS) completed 19 of 23 passes for 289 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in the Prairie Fire’s win over Carroll. One of Erwin’s touchdown strikes was a school-record 93-yarder.

Defensive


Casey Urlacher
Lake Forest

Urlacher, a senior linebacker from Lovington, New Mexico, (Lovington HS) logged a game-high 15 tackles including eight solos and one for a loss while forcing two fumbles. Urlacher also added a pass break-up on a potential Grinnell score and scored a rushing touchdown, his third of the season.

Mike Fritz
Ripon

Fritz, a senior placekicker from Omro, Wis., kicked two field goals and connected on 5 of 5 extra points in a win over Monmouth. Fritz’s field goals sailed 46 and 36 yards respectively, the former being the second longest in school history.

 


Week #3 : September 22, 2002

Offensive


Mike Fitzgerald
Lake Forest

Fitzgerald, a senior wide reciever from Aurora, Col., (Kent Denver HS) scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of Saturday’s rally win over Beloit. Fitzgerald hauled in an 18-yard score with 2:48 left to play, then recovered the onside kick and turned a short pass completion into a 28-yard touchdown with a minute to play. On the day he caught 12 passes for 171 yards and the two touchdowns.

Defensive


Joe Masciopinto
St. Norbert

Masciopinto, a junior defensive back from Harwood Heights, Ill., (Niles Notre Dame HS) recorded 10 tackles (six solo), three tackles for a loss, and defensed two passes in the Green Knights’ win over Monmouth. Masciopinto also had an interception in his own endzone to thwart a Scot’s scoring opportunity late in the third period.

Pat Dunne
Lake Forest

Dunne, a senior kicker/punter from Palos Heights, Ill., (Marist HS) nailed field goals of 40 and 32 yards and was successful on two onside kicks in Lake Forest’s come-from-behind win over Beloit.


Week #4 : September 29, 2002

Offensive

Nate Skelton
Beloit

Skelton, a first-year quarterback from Cambridge, Ill., (Cambridge HS) completed 21 of 31 passes for 284 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions while rushing for a fourth score in just his third collegiate start. The rookie signal caller’s touchdown passes covered 45, 10 and 9 yards while his scoring run was two yards in the victory over Monmouth. Skelton leads the MWC in passing efficiency at 167.7 through three games.

Chris Staley
Beloit

Staley, a senior defensive end from Chillicothe, Ill., collected 11 tackles, including three quarterback sacks, to go with his two fumble recoveries in the Bucs win over Monmouth. Staley’s effort helped the Beloit defense hold Monmouth to just 55 plays and 20 minutes of possession time.

Chris Griffin
St. Norbert

Griffin, a junior kicker from Oneida, Wis., (Pulaski HS) was a school-record 4 of 6 on field goals and made all five extra points in the Green Knights’ win over Knox. Griffin scored 17 points in the game, just missing the NCAA record for points in a game with 20. Four of Griffin’s seven kickoffs were to the endzone, two of which were touchbacks.


Week #5 : October 6, 2002

Offensive


Matt Trickey
Ripon

Trickey, a sophomore from Waukesha, Wis., (West HS) was 16-for17 Saturday in a win over Carroll and racked up 354 yards and four touchdowns. The touchdown strikes were 12, 30, 31 and 40 yards. Trickey also rushed for another 2-yard score in the contest.

Offensive


Ed Williams
Beloit

Williams, a senior running back from Midlothian, Texas, also had a career day scoring all four Buc touchdowns while rushing for 128 yards on just 11 carries. Williams also caught two passes for 97 yards, giving him 225 yards of offense on just 13 touches.

Defensive

Omar Pickering
Lake Forest

Pickering, a sophomore linebacker from Mt. Vernon, New York, (Port Chester HS) led the Foresters to victory over Monmouth with a dozen tackles including eight solos and one for a loss. Pickering also added his second interception of the season.

Special Teams

Jim Schueller
Grinnell

Schueller, a senior punter and punt returner from Primghar, Iowa, (South O’Brien HS) played an important role in Grinnell’s dramatic win over Knox Saturday. Schueller had five punts that averaged 41.8 yards on the day with a long of 63 yards. As a punt returner, Schueller had four returns for 87 yards with his longest being a 77-yard touchdown early in the first quarter for the Pioneer’s first score. The senior also blocked a field goal attempt and recovered a fumble on a kickoff.


Week #6 : October 13, 2002

Offensive


Tom Neagle
Knox

Neagle, a junior wide receiver from Naperville, Ill., (North HS) caught ten passes for 115 yards and four touchdowns in a win over previously undefeated Lake Forest. Neagle’s fourth TD reception proved to be the eventual game winner and tied a school record for touchdown catches in a game.

Joe Masciopinto
St. Norbert

Masciopinto, a junior defensive back from Harwood Heights, Ill., (Notre Dame HS) led the Green Knight defense to a shutout of Lawrence with five tackles, one sack and two interceptions including one that was returned 35 yards for a touchdown. Masciopinto also defensed three passes.

Lee Henderson
Knox

Henderson, a senior punter from Grinnell, Iowa, (Community HS) punted six times for 241 yards, or 40.2 yards per punt, with a long of 54 yards. Henderson’s kicks pinned Lake Forest back throughout the day allowing them just one total yard in punt returns in the contest.


Week #7 : October 20, 2002

Offensive

Alec Getschow
St. Norbert

Getschow, a sophomore running back from DePere, Wis., (West HS) rushed 18 times for 112 yards and five touchdowns, and added four pass receptions for 100 yards in a win over Carroll. Getschow’s five touchdowns tied a school record and his 100-yard rushing and receiving performance marks the second time the feat has been accomplished at St. Norbert.

Kevin Krabel
Lake Forest

Krabel, a senior middle linebacker from Oakland, Ill., (Oakland HS) recorded nine tackles, including four solos and six for a loss of 26 yards, to go along with his three-and-a-half sacks and an interception in a win over Illinois C. Krabel’s final sack came on a key late-game drive by Illinois C. for the potential game-winning score.

B.J. Harvey
Illinois C.

Harvey, a junior punt/kick returner from Downers Grove, Ill., (South HS) kept the Blueboys in the game against Lake Forest with two punt returns for touchdowns. Harvey’s scores covered 64 and 63 yards respectively. For the day the junior totaled 142 yards in punt returns and 110 yards on three kickoff returns, including a long of 61 yards.


Week #8 : October 27, 2002

Offensive

Aljay Wren
St. Norbert

Wren, a first-year running back from Cottage Grove, Wis., (Monona Grove HS) rushed 29 times for 112 yards and four touchdowns in the Green Knights’ win over Ripon. Wren added three receptions for 29 yards and another touchdown to become only the fourth player in St. Norbert history to score five touchdowns in one game.

Defensive

Casey Rentmeester
St. Norbert

Rentmeester, a sophomore linebacker from Green Bay, Wis., (East HS) tallied 11 tackles, including seven solos and one sack, and added an interception, a fumble recovery and two passes defensed to lead the Green Knights to the victory over Ripon. Rentmeester and his defensive squad held the league’s top-ranked offense to just 242 yard total yards.

Zach Michael
Lawrence

Michael, a junior wide receiver from Appleton, Wis., (East HS) returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown in Lawrence’s loss to Grinnell. Michael’s score in the fourth quarter gave the Vikings a 30-27 lead at the time. For the day Michael had three punt returns for 89 yards, a 29.7 average.


Week #9 : November 3, 2002

Offensive

Adam Lewis
St. Norbert

Lewis, a first-year running back from Kingsford, Mich., carried the ball 34 times for 223 yards and three touchdowns in St. Norbert’s win at Grinnell. Lewis, who also caught three passes, logged only the seventh 200-plus yard rushing performance for the Green Knights in the last 30 years.

Andy Stumpf
Monmouth

Stumpf, a sophomore defensive end from Carrollton, Ill., (Carrollton HS) recorded six tackles, including four for losses and two sacks setting Carroll back 25 yards in offfense total. Stumpf also added a pass deflection in Monmouth’s win over Carroll.

Special Teams

Pat Dunne
Lake Forest

Dunne, a senior kicker/punter from Palos Heights, Ill., (Marist HS) connected on two field goals of 26 and 50 yards respectively in a win over Lawrence. Dunne’s 50-yard boot was a school record. In addition, Dunne averaged 36 yards a punt and had two that went over 47 yards each and another that pinned the Pioneers down within their own 10-yard line.


Week #10 : November 10, 2002

Offensive

Luke Hagel
Ripon

Hagel, a senior running back from Random Lake, Wis., (Random Lake HS) gained 277 yards on 32 carries and scored four times in Ripon’s victory over Lawrence. Hagel scored on runs of 2, 6, 1 and 1 yards and his longest carry of the day was 63 yards. Hagel set the school record for rushing yardage in a season with 1,616 and rushing touchdowns in a season at 19.

Defensive


Drew Holman
Lake Forest

Holman, a junior safety from Morris, Ill., (Morris HS) picked off two passes and added four solo tackles as the Forester defense shutout league-leading St. Norbert, the country’s fourth highest scoring offense. Holman’s first interception early in the fourth quarter thwarted the Green Knights’ best scoring opportunity of the day. His second pick of the day gave him a school-record seven for the season.

Special Teams


Andy Full
Monmouth

Full, a junior kicker from Sublette, Ill., (Amboy HS) had his best game as a Fighting Scot scoring nine points in Monmouth’s Turkey Bowl win over rival Knox. Full split the uprights on three PAT’s and two field goals, including a 21-yard boot on the final play of the first half to give Monmouth a lead they did not relinquish.
