Lake Forest College Athletic Director Jackie Slaats officially announced Thursday (January 27) that defensive coordinator Brent Becker will take over as interim head coach of the Forester football team for 2005. The school will conduct a national search for a permanent head coach following next season and Becker is expected to be among the finalists for the position.
Lake Forest posted a 17-5 overall record in Becker’s two successful seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator. His units ranked among the national leaders in various statistical categories and surrendered fewer points than any other team in the league each of his two years. In addition, a Forester was named MWC Defensive Player of the Year both seasons.
Prior to coming to Lake Forest, Becker served as an assistant coach at Knox College (1998), Greenville College (1999-00), and Saginaw Valley State University (2001-02). His teams have posted a combined record of 52-24 and he has yet to suffer through a losing season in his seven years of coaching.
Becker replaces Chad Eisele, who coached the Foresters for the last five seasons and recently accepted the head coaching position at Minnesota State University Moorhead. |

| Coach ranks third in Forester history in wins after just after five seasons |
LAKE FOREST, IL – Lake Forest College Head Football Coach Chad Eisele announced Wednesday (January 26) that he will be leaving the school and has accepted the same position at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Eisele led Lake Forest to an 8-2 overall record in 2004 and a 7-2 mark and third-place finish in the Midwest Conference. The Foresters were 31-20 (.607) overall in his five seasons and 28-16 (.636) in league play under his direction. In addition, the 2002 squad captured the program’s first conference championship since 1983.
Eisele ranks third in Lake Forest College football history in coaching victories and the Foresters have set or tied 39 school records in his tenure as head coach, including the 2002 team’s nine victories. He was named MWC Coach of the Year following that season and his players have earned the last three MWC Defensive Player of the Year distinctions. Seven different players have achieved All-American status under his direction and Lake Forest has garnered 60 All-MWC selections since 2000.
Minnesota State University Moorhead is an NCAA Division II institution with more than 7,500 students. The Dragons compete with seven other schools in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Eisele replaces Ralph Micelli, who coached MSUM for 12 seasons. |

Lawrence University's Matt Kehrein had his role in the Athletic Department recently restructured. All changes are effective immediately. Kehrein, who is the head track and field coach and assistant football coach, will focus solely on coaching football and will no longer coach track and field.
A1998 Lawrence graduate, Kehrein has been coaching football with the Vikings for six seasons and took over as head coach of track and field in 2002. On the football field, Kehrein coaches the running backs and helped mold one of the best backs in Lawrence history, Justin Berrens. On the track, he helped guide three athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships, including two-time All-American Kolade Agbaje-Williams. (LU Sports Info) |

APPLETON, Wis. – Appleton native Chris Howard has been named the new head football coach at Lawrence University, Director of Athletics Kim Tatro announced Tuesday.
Howard, the defensive coordinator at St. Norbert College, becomes the 25th head coach in the football program’s long and storied history. He replaces Dave Brown, who stepped down in November after six seasons.
“We are incredibly excited to have Chris join our staff,” Tatro said. “He brings a wealth of football knowledge to the Lawrence program. His coaching experience in the Midwest Conference should facilitate the transition quite well. His energy and enthusiasm will impact the program immediately.”
Howard comes to Lawrence after spending the past three seasons as the defensive coordinator and defensive secondary coach at St. Norbert. He helped the Green Knights win three conference championships and post the first NCAA Division III playoff victory in school history. St. Norbert compiled an impressive 29-4 record over the past three seasons, and the Green Knights ranked first in total defense in the Midwest Conference each of the last two years.
“I’m extremely excited about this opportunity,” Howard said. “I’ve been waiting for a coaching position such as this for my entire career. I feel very fortunate to be at a place like Lawrence. With the university in my hometown and my comfort level coaching in the Midwest Conference, I believe this is an ideal fit for me.”
Howard has an impressive coaching background that ranges from the prep level to NCAA Division I-A. Before going to St. Norbert, Howard coached for Southern Utah University from 1996-2002. He served as both offensive and defensive coordinator at Southern Utah. As the offensive coordinator, the Thunderbirds ranked second in the nation in rushing and 16th in total offense. His defense had three seasons ranked in the top 25 in total defense.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Howard played football for the Pointers and earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He earned a master’s degree in physical education from Illinois State University in 1986. He was a doctoral candidate in exercise and sports science at the University of Utah and has all but his dissertation completed.
Howard served as a graduate assistant football coach at both Southern Illinois and Utah.
Howard, who played his prep football for legendary coach Paul Engen at Appleton West High School, is married. Howard and his wife, Mimi, have a son, Nicholas. |

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College Fighting Scots fullback Adam Chorazy has been selected to play for the American Football Coaches Association’s Division III all-star team that will represent the United States against the Mexican National Team in the 2004 Aztec Bowl. The game will be played on Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. CST in Cancun, Mexico.
Chorazy was the lead blocker for a Scots offense that averaged 188 yards per game on the ground. Throughout his career, the 250-pounder was used like an NFL fullback, getting very limited carries. Chorazy, though, was a favorite target of Scots’ quarterbacks near the goal-line, as nine of his 22 career catches went for TDs. He wound up with 127 rushing yards had 239 receiving yards at Monmouth and did not lose yardage on any of his 32 career carries.
Chorazy is one of 42 Division III seniors from around the country who will make up this year’s team. Former Central College head coach Ron Schipper will direct the team for the eighth consecutive year. The Aztec Bowl is the traditional season-ending game for Mexico’s college football season. The game has been played 33 times since 1947 with the last seven contests featuring the United States-Mexico matchup. The United States leads the series 6-1. Mexico’s lone victory came in last year’s game, which was also played in Cancun.
The preview shows and game Webcast can all be accessed via AFCA’s Web site at www.afca.com and via the Aztec Bowl Web site at www.aztecbowl.com. Postgame results will also be available at www.afca.com. |

APPLETON, Wis. – Dave Brown has resigned as head football coach at Lawrence University, Director of Athletics Kim Tatro announced Tuesday.
Brown informed the football team and assistant coaches of his decision before Monday’s practice. A national search for Brown’s replacement will begin immediately, Tatro said.
“This has been the most tremendous 12 years of my life at Lawrence University, and I wouldn’t trade a single day of the experience I’ve had here,”
Brown said. Brown is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Vikings and served as the team’s defensive coordinator for six seasons prior to that. He will take the sideline for the last time on Saturday when Lawrence faces Macalester College at noon in the season finale at the Banta Bowl.
Brown, 43, added that he is stepping away from the coaching profession. He cited family reasons as one of the contributing factors toward his decision. Brown and his wife, Kathy, have three children.
“I had to take a look at myself and evaluate what I wanted to do,” Brown said. “I wanted to try some new things and see what else is out there in the world. I felt that this was a good time to wrap up the coaching and give everything I had to the football team for one last season.”
Despite the fact the Vikings have struggled at times during Brown’s six-year run as head coach, he leaves a team that is ripe with potential. Brown has increased the size and depth of the team, and when the Vikings take the field in 2005, they could return more than 40 letter winners. Lawrence loses only two starters from this year’s squad.
“I am very proud of the state of the program as I leave,” Brown said. “Whoever comes in has the opportunity to take this team and keep building something positive.”
Brown’s tenure is tied for the fifth-longest for a Lawrence football coach, trailing only Bernie Heselton (1938-64), Ron Roberts (1965-83, 1992), Mark Catlin (1909-18, 1924-27), and Rich Agness (1984-91).
In addition to being the head football coach, Brown also served as director of athletics from July 2000 to August 2002. He led the department of athletics 1993 and took on the dual role of football team defensive coordinator and head coach of the track and field team. As the track coach, the Vikings enjoyed a resurgence under Brown’s leadership, and he had the distinction of coaching the college’s first national champion, long jumper Diana Ling.
Tatro, who succeeded Brown as the director of athletics, commended his overall service to the department of athletics.
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Dave since I arrived on campus in 1993. He has been a wonderful colleague, and I will miss his good humor,” Tatro said.
“We appreciate what Dave has done for the athletics department over the past 12 years, You will not find a better ambassador for the college than Dave Brown. He has given his heart and soul to the athletics department.”
Brown said resigning was a difficult decision, but added it was easy to choose the things he would miss the most.
“I will miss the friendships I’ve had with our staff and players,” he said. “The thing that makes Lawrence special is the people. I’ve been fortunate to have been involved with so many quality people.”
