Performers of the Week

Week #1 : September 6, 2004

Offensive


Sean Pfalzer, Grinnell

Pfalzer, a sophomore quarterback from Morago, Cal., was 20 of 37 for 321 yards and 3 touchdowns in Grinnell’s 27-24 win over Ripon. Pfalzer led the game winning 10-play, 93-yard drive that propelled Grinnell to its first win over Ripon since 1998. On that game-winning drive, Pfalzer was 5 of 8 for 60 yards, rushed twice for 20 yards, and completed a 2-yard TD pass to Trey Raney with :33 seconds remaining to give Grinnell the final margin of victory.

Defensive


Tyler Krzewina, Lawrence
Krzewina, a sophomore safety from Kaukauna, Wis. (Kaukauna), was a key to Lawrence’s 30-7 victory over Knox on Saturday. Krzewina had an interception, broke up two passes in the end zone, recorded a sack, had five tackles, and forced a fumble that led to Lawrence’s first touchdown. Krzewina picked up his sixth career interception in the fourth quarter. Earlier, he batted away what looked to be a pair of sure touchdown passes when the game was still in doubt. Krzewina also sacked Knox quarterback Anthony McClenathan in the first quarter and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Lawrence. The Vikings scored a touchdown on the next play to take a 7-0 lead.

Special Teams


Chris LaPorta, Beloit
LaPorta, a senior kicker from Woodridge, Ill. (Downers Grove South), scored 10 points in Beloit’s 58-14 victory over Macalester on Saturday. He connected on 7 of 8 extra-point attempts and made a 36-yard field goal. On his 10 kickoffs, he averaged 54.4 yards per kick.

 


Week #2 : September 13, 2004

Offensive


Jarid Crain, Illinois C.
Crain, a sophomore halfback from Auburn, Ill. (Auburn H.S.) rushed for a game-high 143 yards on 11 carries and scored touchdowns on runs of 4 and 54 yards in Illinois C.’s win over Lawrence.

Defensive


Mitch Wilson, Illinois C.

Wilson, a junior defensive lineman from Rantoul, Ill. (Rantoul HS), raced 31 yards with a pass interception and scored in Illinois C.’s win over Lawrence. He also finished with seven assisted tackles.

Special Teams


Ted Serafini, Beloit

Serafini, a senior defensive back from Fayetteville, Ark. (Fayetteville), tied a NCAA record with four blocked kicks in Beloit’s loss at St. Norbert. Serafini blocked three extra points and one punt against the Green Knights to tie the record held by three other players. The Division III record is held by Bob Paulus of Rhodes, who blocked three field goals and one PAT against Washington University on Sept. 29, 2001. The other record-holders are at the Division I-A level. Ken Irvin of Memphis blocked four punts vs. Arkansas on Sept. 26, 1992, and James King of Central Michigan blocked four punts vs. Michigan on Sept. 8, 2001.

Week #3 : September 20, 2004

Offensive


Nate Wineinger, Grinnell

 

Wineinger, a senior from Mason City, Iowa, scored five touchdowns and racked up 326 yards of total offense, including 238 rushing yards on 26 carries, the second-best single-game rushing output in school history against non-conference foe Macalester. Wineinger scored four rushing touchdowns, including a 79-yard TD run, setting a new Grinnell record for rushing TDs in a single-game. Wineinger scored on runs of 3, 8, 15 and 79, and turned a screen-pass into a 55-yard TD reception.

Defensive


Jeff Whiteside, Illinois C.

Whiteside, a senior defensive back from Jerseyville Ill. (White Hall-North Greene HS), had a pair of interceptions in Illinois College’s win at Carroll Saturday and finished with four solo stops and three assists. He also broke up a pass. With the game’s outcome still in the balance, Whiteside made his first pick on the final play of the third quarter, returning the ball three yards to midfield. On Carroll’s first series in the fourth quarter, he intercepted a pass at the Carroll 35 and returned it to the Carroll 3-yard line, setting up the Blueboys’ fourth touchdown.

Special Teams


Mac Schumann, Ripon

Schumann, a first-year kicker from Menasha, Wis. (Menasha H.S.), connected on six-of-seven extra points in Ripon’s win at Lawrence. Schumann also kicked-off ten times, pinning the Vikings inside their 30-yard line for most of the game allowing them an average starting field position at the 29-yard line.

Week #4 : September 27, 2004

Offensive


Ryan Hartman, St. Norbert

 

Hartman, a senior quarterback from Appleton, Wis. (Xavier HS), became St. Norbert’s career passing leader, moving to 5,531 yards in the Green Knights’ win over Knox on Saturday. Hartman, with 214 yards against the Prairie Fire, surpassed Greg Cavanaugh, whose 5,442-yard record has stood since 1980. Hartman has completed 60.6 percent of his passes this season for 796 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

 

Defensive


Casey Rentmeester, St. Norbert

Rentmeester, a senior from Green Bay, Wis (East HS), led St. Norbert’s defense to a shutout win of Knox, which was held to 111 yards of offense including 16 passing. The senior linebacker had a team-high eight tackles with a forced fumble, two quarterback sacks and two tackles for loss.

Special Teams


Brian Jachimek, Carroll

Jachimek, a first-year kicker from Midlothian, Ill. (Marist), was 7-for-7 on extra point attempts in Carroll’s victory over Lawrence. He is now 14 of 14 on the season.

Week #5 : October 4, 2004

Offensive


Lee Rankinen, Beloit

Rankinen, a sophomore from Menominee, Mich. (Menominee HS), had one of the most prolific days in Beloit’s storied football history on Saturday as the Bucs beat host Lawrence. Rankinen rushed for 248 yards on 35 carries (7.1 average) and scored two touchdowns. The 248 yards is the third-highest total in College history and falls just 26 yards shy of the all-time mark at Beloit. For the year, the running back has gained 711 yards through the first five games, has four 100-plus rushing games, is averaging 142.2 yards per game and 6.2 yards per carry. His longest rush on Saturday was for 41 yards.

Defensive


Zach Davidson, Ripon

Davidson, a junior defensive back from Byron, Ill., helped Ripon to a victory over Carroll has he picked off two Pioneer passes and returned one ten yards for a touchdown. He also recorded 2.5 tackles, one for a loss of two yards, as well as running in a two point conversion accounting for eight points on the day. Davidson also had three pass breakups.

Special Teams


Willie Thompson, Illinois C.

Thompson, a senior defensive lineman and punter from Carthage, Ill. (Carthage HS), put on a tremendous punting display in Illinois College’s loss to St. Norbert. Thompson punted five times for an average of 51 yards per punt. He drilled his longest punt of his career and in recent Midwest Conference history. Thompson had a 75-yard punt, which topped his previous best of 69 yards. It’s also the longest punt in the league since at least the 2001 season. Thompson, who is leading the league with a 46.4 yard average, also pinned the Green Knights inside their 20-yard line twice.

Week #6 : October 11, 2004

Offensive


Chris Rogers, Carroll

Rogers, a freshman quarterback from Oconomowoc, Wis. (Oconomowoc HS),completed 12-of-15 passes for 165 yards, including one touchdown toss, and rushed for a game-high 101 yards, to lead Carroll to a road win over Beloit. Trailing 28-27, Rogers hit teammate Adam Fletcher on a 23-yard touchdown pass. The PAT put Carroll ahead 28-27 with 4:29 to play in the game. Rogers wasn’t done, as he scampered 39 yards for a touchdown to seal the victory with 1:27 remaining in the game. Carroll improves to 3-3 overall, 3-2 in the MWC.

Defensive


Willie Thompson, Illinois C.

Thompson, a senior defensive tackle from Carthage, Ill. (Carthage HS), led a determined Blueboy defense by recording four tackles for lost yardage and forcing two Ripon fumbles in Illinois College’s victory over the Red Hawks. Thompson led both teams with 2.5 sacks, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass. His totals totals also included eight solo tackles and seven assists for a final tally of 11.5.

Special Teams


Washington Osler, Carroll

Osler, a sophomore defensive back from Ypsilanti, Mich. (Ypsilanti HS), blocked a key extra point attempt in Carroll’s victory at Beloit this past Saturday. The block, which as Osler’s fourth of the season, was critical because is preserved Carroll’s 28-27 lead over the Bucs. The Pioneers then sealed the win with a touchdown with 1:27 remaining in the contest.

Week #7: October 18, 2004

Offensive


Matt Mahaney, Lake Forest
Mahaney, a sophomore quarterback from West Chicago, Ill. (Addison Driscoll HS), led Lake Forest to a victory over Illinois C. on Saturday in a battle of 4-1 teams. Mahaney completed 16 of 23 passes for 257 yards and a touchdown in the contest. He found six different receivers during the game, including three for receptions of more than 40 yards.

Defensive


Chris Albanese, Carroll
Albanese, a sophomore linebacker from Milwaukee , Wis.(Greenfield ), led the Carroll defensive unit in a narrow loss to defending MWC Champion St. Norbert. Albanese recorded a season-high 16 tackles (8 solo, 8 assisted) and forced three Green Knight fumbles. He also had two tackles for loss of yardage and had one pass break-up.

Special Teams


Brandon Wogoman, Carroll

Wogoman, a freshman wide receiver and punter from Rockford, Ill. (Winnebago), played a part in almost every aspect of special teams play during Carroll’s loss to St. Norbert. Wogoman returned four punts for 115 yards, including a 66-yard return to help set up a Pioneers touchdown. He also punted four times for 148 yards (37.0-yard average) and pinned the Green Knights inside their 20-yard line once. In addition, he recorded an assisted tackle on special teams and caught two passes for 61 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter.

Week #8 : October 25, 2004

Offensive


Trey Raney, Grinnell
Raney, a senior quarterback and wide receiver from Hesston, Kan., had seven receptions for 109 yards and two TDs, including the game-winner with :24 seconds remaining to complete an 17-point comeback for the Pioneers and seal the victory over Lawrence.

Defensive


Tyler Krzewina, Lawrence

Krzewina, a sophomore safety from Kaukauna, Wis. (Kaukauna HS), returned an interception for a touchdown and recorded a game-high 17 tackles in Lawrence’s loss at Grinnell. Krzewina, who also had three passes defensed, intercepted a pass and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter. It was Krzewina’s fourth interception of the season and the ninth of his career. It was also his first collegiate touchdown.

Special Teams


Mike Carter, Lake Forest
Carter, a senior kicker and punter from Arlington Heights, Ill. (St. Viator), helped lead Lake Forest to a victory at Carroll on Saturday. Carter was perfect as a kicker, making both of his extra points and all three of his field goal attempts (33, 19, and 25 yards). His one punt on the day traveled 41 yards before going out of bounds at the 18.

Week #9 : November 1, 2004

Offensive

Casey Meehan, St. Norbert

Meehan, a junior runningback from Rockbridge, Ill. (Greenfield HS), rushed for a career-high 254 yards in Saturday’s win over Grinnell. The output was the third-highest single-game rushing total in school history, and gives him 1,079 yards for the season. Meehan scored three touchdowns to tie a St. Norbert season record with 21 and his 128 points on the year are a new school season record.

Defensive


Brian Short, Illinois C.

Short, a senior linebacker from Eldred, Ill. (Carrollton HS), registered a personal-best and season-high 24 tackles in Illinois College’s loss at Knox. His totals include a career-high 14 solo tackles, along with 10 assists. Short’s day featured 1.5 tackles for lost yards (11), along with 1.5 sacks for minus-11.

Week #10 : November 8, 2004

Offensive


Evan Haffner, Monmouth

Haffner, a sophomore wide receiver from Canton, Ill. (Canton HS), put his name in the Monmouth record books for several season categories after his huge day against Knox on Saturday. Haffner hauled in passes of 52, 75 and 38 yards among his five catches, with two of those going for scores. He finished the day with 213 receiving yards. Season records Haffner set included receiving TDs (11), receiving yards (911) and all-purpose yards (1,523).

Defensive

Ben Creamer, St. Norbert
Creamer, a senior linebacker from Hancock, Wis. (Plainfield Tri-County HS), paced a St. Norbert defense with a career performance in the Green Knights’ win over Lake Forest in the season finale. Creamer had a team-high nine tackles, but six went for a loss totaling 32 yards. He also had two sacks totaling a loss of 24 yards, and had one pass defensed.

Special Teams


Nathan Palkovic, Monmouth

Palkovic, a freshman from kicker from Peoria, Ill. (Woodruff), put his name in the Monmouth record book for PATs and kicking points in a season on Saturday. He booted four PATs to finish the year 40-of-42 in that department. Palkovic also added a 34-yard field goal in the Scots’ 45-0 win, his eighth three-pointer of the year. His 40 PATs and 64 kicking points established new MC marks. Palkovic also ran in a two-point conversion vs. Knox and punted five times for a 38.4-yard average.

Week #11: November 17, 2003

Offensive


Adrell Bullock, Lawrence

Bullock, a sophomore from Chicago, Ill. (Beaver Dam Wayland), ran 19 times for a career-high 173 yards in Lawrence’s non-conference win over Macalester. Bullock scored a pair of touchdowns, including a spectacular 59-yard touchdown early in the second quarter in which he eluded several defenders before cutting back across the field and out-sprinting the Macalester defense.

Defensive


Joe Vander Zanden, Lawrence

Vander Zanden, a freshman linebacker from Kimberly, Wis. (Kimberly), led the Lawrence defense in its suffocating attack against Macalester. Vander Zanden recorded a game-high 12 tackles, including three tackles for loss and a sack. He also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble, which was recovered by Lawrence. Spearheaded by Vander Zanden, Lawrence limited Macalester to 58 yards rushing on 32 carries.
