Week #1 : September 8, 2003

Bucs running backs Jon Dupuis (senior, Beloit, Wis.) and Scott Weber (sophomore, Peoria, Ill.), were an outstanding 1-2 punch as the Bucs steamrolled visiting Macalester College 46-19 on Saturday. They combined for 250 yards rushing and five touchdowns as the Bucs overcame a 19-7 halftime deficit and put a whopping 39 points on the board in the second half.

Dupuis gained 107 yards and scored three TDs. Weber gained 143 yards and scored two TDs. The two blocked for each other all afternoon.

Joe Macsiopinto
St. Norbert College
Masciopinto, a senior defensive back from Harwood Heights, Ill. is the Defensive Performer of the Week in football. Masciopinto registered seven tackles for the Green Knights in their 21-19 victory over MIAC foe St. Thomas. The SNC defender snared a key interception in the fourth quarter that set up the Knights' clinching touchdown. He also had a pass breakup.

Ted Serafini
Beloit

 

Ted Serafini, a junior from Fayetteville, Arkansas, blocked an extra point and a punt during Beloit's 46-19 default of Macalester College on Saturday. He also had a pair of tackles on special teams.


Week #2 : September 15, 2003

Offensive


Aljay Wren
St. Norbert

Wren (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) had a record day Saturday and is named the Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week. Wren rushed for a career high 175 yards on 22 carries, an average of 8.0 yards per rush, in the Green Knights’ 41-6 win over Beloit. The sophomore running back also had three rushing touchdowns of 2, 45 and 7 yards.

Lake Forest

Kopf, a senior defensive back from West Lafayette, Ind., (Harrison HS) recorded two interceptions in Knox’s victory over Carroll. His first interception denied Carroll a chance from tying the game at 14 midway through the second quarter after he picked off Carroll’s pass at the goaline and ran it back 48 yards. He also recorded a tackle and helped the Prairie Fire defense limit the Carroll offense to 109 total yards including -2 rushing yards.

Gillihan, a senior safety from Leawood, Kansas (Blue Valley North), registered 14 tackles, including a sack and two stops behind the line of scrimmage.

Lake Forest

Gillihan, a senior safety from Leawood, Kan., (Blue Valley North H.S.) put Lake Forest ahead by a touchdown just over a minute into the game by picking up a blocked punt and returning it 34 yards for the game’s first score. Gillihan also added one special teams tackle.

Week #3 : September 22, 2003

Banks, a junior from Ripon, Wis. (Ripon HS) helped the Red Hawks rebound from last week’s loss with a thrilling win over Knox. The junior seven passed for 138 yards and scored TDs of 31 and 30 yards.

Lake Forest

Gallegos, a freshman linebacker from Plantation, Fla, led his team with 15 tackles (3 solo), and registered 1.5 sacks, for a loss of seven yards in the Foresters' 20-16 victory over Beloit.

Special Teams


Chris Griffin
St. Norbert

Griffin, a senior kicker from Oneida, Wis., (Pulaski), helped St. Norbert defeat Monmouth 38-15 Saturday. Griffin made each of his five extra point attempts and added a 35-yard field goal. He also became the fourth player in team history to reach 200 points in his career.

Monmouth

 

Killion, a wide receiver from Jacksonville, Ill (Jacksonville HS), tied the school record with three receiving touchdowns covering 10, 68 and 51yards. For the day he finished with three catches good for a team-high 129 yards.

 

 

 

 

Purlee, a senior quarterback from Mt. Carroll, Ill (Mt. Carroll HS), nearly set a school record with 374 passing yards, just eight shy of the school mark. He completed 18 of 25 attempts with one interception. Purlee's four TD tosses in the game rank him second in the Fighting Scot record book.

Brian Short
Illinois C.

Caroen, a freshman linebacker from Iron River, Mich. (West Iron). He played a pivotal role in his team’s 28-26 win over Carroll that snapped Lawrence’s school-record 17-game losing streak. Caroen picked off a Carroll pass in the third quarter and raced 48 yards for a touchdown, putting the Vikings ahead to stay at 21-14. He also led Lawrence with 13 tackes, including 3 TFL.

Short, a junior linebacker from Carrollton, Ill (Carrollton HS), registered a game-high 13 tackles (including 4 solo and 2 TFL), added a sack and a pass break up as the Blueboys won 10-0 at Grinnell. It was IC’s first MWC shutout since 1992. Short sealed the win with an interception in the final minute.

B.J. Berlowski
Lawrence

Berlowski, a senior from Sheboygan Falls, Wis. (Sheboygan Falls HS), helped Lawrence defeat Carroll 28-26 on Saturday. After the Pioneers scored a fourth-quarter touchdown, the 6’5" defensive end blocked the extra point attempt to preserve the Vikings’ 21-20 lead. After each team reached the end zone again, Carroll was unsuccessful on its two-point conversion attempt to tie the score and the Vikings’ 17-game losing streak was over.

Justin Berrens
Lawrence

Berrens, a junior halfback from Waupaca, Wis. (HS), ran 35 times for 164 yards and a touchdown in Lawrence’s victory over Beloit. Berrens, who is averaging 124.8 yards per game and 4.3 yards per carry on the season, got Lawrence on the board first with a 21-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was classic Berrens, grinding out the yardage, as he had only four rushes of 10 yards or more. He helped secure the win by running the ball eight consecutive times, as Lawrence got two key first downs and ran 4:41 off the clock. By the time Beloit got the ball back, only 52 seconds remained in the game.

Carroll

 

 

Fiorito, a sophomore defensive tackle from Park Ridge Ill. (Maine South), led the way with four sacks and six tackles-for-loss. His totals included 11 tackles and three quarterback hurries. The win was the first of the season for Carroll.

oe Masciopinto
St. Norbert

Masciopinto, a senior from Harwood Heights, Illinois (Niles Notre Dame), helped St. Norbert College hand Illinois College its first Midwest Conference loss of the season Saturday. Masciopinto had a 61-yard kickoff return and two punt returns for a total of 60 yards in the Green Knights’ victory. He took one of the punt returns 45 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter to put his team ahead 17-7.

Week #6 : October 13, 2003

Zach Michael
Lawrence

Michael, a senior wide-receiver from Appleton, Wis. (East) caught 10 passes for 220 yards and scored all four of the Vikings touchdowns in their loss to St. Norbert this past Saturday. The four touchdown catches set a Lawrence record, breaking the mark of three Michael held with five other players. Michael hauled in an 80-yard TD toss to give him three touchdown catches of 71 yards or more in his career, including a school-record 96 yard scoring catch and he posted two scores in the final 5:06 of the game. The MWC’s leading receiver has 33 catches for 590 yards and six touchdowns for an average of 118.0 yards per game.

Justin Zigler
Monmouth

Zigler, a sophomore from Tampico Ill. (Prophetstown HS) registered 19 tackles in the Scots’ 30-20 victory over Grinnell College. With the score tied at 13 early in the second half, Zigler forced a fumble that Monmouth recovered. The ensuing drive led to a field goal that put the Scots ahead to stay.

Keith Hanson
Lake Forest

Hanson, a sophomore from Fairfax, Virginia (Chantilly HS), made a pair of big plays in Lake Forest’s victory on Saturday at Knox. Hanson blocked the extra point attempt after Knox took a 6-0 fourth-quarter lead. Later, with the Foresters ahead 7-6, he returned a punt 41 yards for his first career touchdown.

St. Norbert

Wren, a sophomore running back from Cottage Grove, Wis. (Monona Grove H.S.), scored a Green Knights’ record six touchdowns in a win over Carroll. Wren rushed for 112 yards on 19 carries for three touchdowns, and also caught seven passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns for the league-leading Green Knights.

Knox
Kopf, a senior from West Lafayette, Ind. (Harrison HS), picked off three Grinnell passes, tying a Knox single-game record for interceptions and matching the school standard for picks in a season (7). Kopf is now within two interceptions of becoming the school’s all-time pass thief. The Prairie Fire defensive back also recorded a pair of tackles, broke up a pass and forced a fumble.

Addy Silverthorn
St. Norbert

Silverthorn, a junior defensive back from Grafton, Wis., was pressed into service this past Saturday as a placekicker in St. Norbert win over Carroll. In his first collegiate action at kicker, Silverthorn was 9-for-9 on extra-point attempts. He also did a solid job off the tee as Carroll’s average field position following the Green Knights’ ten kickoffs was its own 24 yard line.

Lawrence

A near-record day for Berrens, a junior from Waupaca, Wis. (HS), on Saturday against Grinnell where he run 40 times for 310 yards (7.8 yards per rush), the second-best rushing day in Vikings’ history, and he hauled in three passes for another 24 yards.While becoming only the second running back in Lawrence history to run for more than 300 yards in a game, he also scored three touchdowns, including a 13-yard run in overtime that gave Lawrence a 47-41 lead.

Drew Holman
Lake Forest

Holman, a junior safety from Morris Ill., tied the Lake Forest single game record for pass interceptions. Holman became the second player in as many weeks to record three interceptions in a game when he grabbed three Carroll passes in the Foresters’ 13-7 loss. His first pick triggered the Foresters’ only scoring drive of the contest. Holman’s second pass theft stopped a Carroll drive at the LFC 27, and his final interception came at the LFC 26 with the score tied at 7 late in the final quarter.

Adam Fletcher
Carroll
Adam Fletcher, a sophomore wide receiver from Norwalk, Wis. (Brookwood HS), led Carroll to a victory at Lake Forest on Saturday. Fletcher had six punt returns for a 17.5 average, including a 61-yard return for a touchdown in the third quarter that tied the game at seven. He accounted for all of Carroll’s 128 punt and kickoff return yards on the day.

Week #9 : November 3, 2003

Kyle Thompson
St. Norbert

Thompson, a senior wide receiver from Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. (Nekoosa), had his first career 100-yard receiving game in a win over Grinnell, catching seven passes for 132 yards and three touchdowns all in the first half for the Green Knights. Thompson’s touchdown receptions were of 15, 43 and 3 yards. He now has eight touchdown receptions this season, a team- high.

Jeff Burke
Knox

 

Burke, a senior linebacker from Oklahoma City, Okla. (Bishop McGuiness H.S.), helped limit Illinois C. to 62 rushing yards Saturday, leading both teams in tackles with 14. Burke also intercepted a pass and was credited with a pass deflection. With Burke playing a key role, the Prairie Fire defense limited the Blueboys to 231 total yards en route to a victory.

John Price
Ripon
Price, a senior from Brussels, Wis. (Southern Door HS), did his part in Ripon’s victory at Beloit. Price, who leads the MWC in punting average this season, punted six times for an average of 41.8 yards on Saturday. His longest on the day was 57 yards.

Week #10 : November 10, 2003

Offensive

 

Nate Skelton
Beloit

Skelton, a sophomore quarterback from Cambridge, Ill. led the Bucs to a come-from-behind win over Illinois College and completed 18-of-23 passes with three TDs and no interceptions for 304 yards, the fifth highest yardage total in Beloit history. It was the first time since 1994 that a Beloit QB topped the 300-yard passing plateau. His TD passes covered 44, 51 and 67 yards. Skelton also had a two-yard touchdown run.

Rob Rogers
Monmouth
Rogers, a senior linebacker, from East Moline (Orion HS), keyed the Scots to a victory over Knox in the 115th meeting between the two schools. Rogers closed out his NCAA career in convincing style with 10 tackles and an interception. His totals one tackle for a loss and a pass breakup. Rogers increased his season tackle total to 97, and he was just one stop shy of tying the Scot’s all-time tackle mark.

Week #11: November 17, 2003

Don Lackey
Lake Forest

Lackey, a senior quarterback from Lindenhurst, Ill, led the Foresters to a thrilling win over Ripon while completing 18 of 30 passes for 288 yards and three touchdowns (30, 11, 77 yards) in the game. He also moved into first place in school history with 5,556 passing yards in his career.

Jacques Hacquebord
Lawrence

Pickering, a junior from Mount Vernon, NY, racked up 18 tackles in the Foresters’ victory at Ripon. He had four solo stops (including one TFL) and 14 assists in the victory, and blocked a punt. Pickering finished the season with 102 tackles.

Hacquebord, a senior safety from Waunakee Wis., made the play of the day when, with time running out, he stepped in front of a Knox pass at the LU 10-yard line and made a game-saving interception which secured the Vikings’ win at Knox. The pick was the eighth of Hacquebord’s career and second this fall. He also registered 11 tackles on the day and broke up a pass.

Bud Baumgartner
Grinnell

Baumgartner, a freshman kicker from Grinnell, Iowa, helped Grinnell defeat Beloit by scoring the first touchdown of the game when a bad snap on a field goal attempt was picked up by the holder and thrown his way. Despite wearing a cast on one hand, Baumgartner made the five-yard grab. He also connected on all three extra point attempts.
