Grinnell Runners Sweep Individual MWC Cross Country Titles

The 2006 Midwest Conference Cross Country Championships saw Grinnell’s women’s team cruise to their third consecutive team title, while the men’s side featured a historic finish that last occurred pre-World War II. Grinnell and Monmouth’s men’s squads tied for the MWC title, as both teams accumulated 36 points. The first and only other time in league history that two teams have tied for the championship happened in 1936 when Lawrence and Carleton shared the honor.

Carroll’s Erin Kelley, the two-time defending MWC champ, was unable to become the first woman in MWC history to win three individual titles, as Grinnell junior Sarah Spencer (right) beat Kelley to the finish line by just over 17 seconds, winning the individual title with a time of 18:35.1 on the 5K course.

Grinnell’s Drake Ballew (left) gave the Pioneers the individual championship sweep, as the junior runner finished the 8K course in 25:41.1. Ballew held off St. Norbert junior Jeff Pentek, who crossed the finish line just over 24 seconds behind the champion.

No matter where the meet has been held, Grinnell’s men’s and women’s teams have managed to make it their own. The Pioneer men enter 2006 in search of their tenth straight conference championship, while the Grinnell women look to run their consecutive league title streak to three in a row.
