Grinnell, Iowa - Grinnell College led all NCAA Division III men’s cross country teams in grade point average, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently announced.
The Pioneers, who won their 12th Midwest Conference title in a row last fall and qualified for the national meet, had a team GPA of 3.650. Both the Grinnell men’s and women’s squads won the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Awards for the 2008 season. A total of 103 men’s teams and 156 women’s squads received the honor. |

Ripon , Wis. - The Ripon men's and women's cross country teams received national recognition this week for their performance in the classroom. Both teams earned a place on the National All-Academic team, as released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCA).
The Ripon College women recorded the third-highest grade point average in the country out of the 390 NCAA Division III schools that have women's cross country, with a team cumulative GPA of 3.75. The Ripon men also received National All-Academic recognition with a team cumulative GPA of 3.14. To receive recognition teams must have a team score at the NCAA regional meet and have a team cumulative GPA of at least 3.10. Jessica Davey was the lone Ripon individual to earn recognition.
To receive this honor, individuals must place in the top 25 percent at the NCAA regional meet and meet the GPA requirement. This is the second year in a row that both the men and the women have received this honor. |

The two harriers were the only women from the MWC to compete at the event. Scherer and Beyer qualified by finishing third and seventh respectively at the Central Region Meet on Nov. 22 at Hanover, Ind. Beyer became the first Fighting Scot woman to ever run at Nationals, while Scherer competed for the second consecutive year.
Bethel's Marie Borner won the individual Championship with a time of 20:43.9, while Middlebury won the team Championship.

The Grinnell men ran to a 26th place finish out of 32 at the 2008 NCAA Division III National Meet. The Pioneers received an at-large bid after placing fourth at the Central Region Meet on Nov. 22 at Hanover, Ind.
Henry Reich (25:16.66) led the way for Grinnell with a 56th place finish out of the 278 competitors. Earlier this season, the Pioneers won their 25th MWC title, sweeping the top five places for a perfect team score of 15.
Hamilton's Peter Kosgei was the individual Champion with a time of 24:22.03, while Cortland State won the team Championship.

Grinnell's Henry Reich, the Individual Medalist in the 2008 Midwest Conference Cross Country Championships, made national news this week as the senior had a tough decision to make regarding his upcoming weekend. Reich earned a Rhodes Scholarship interview scheduled for Saturday November 22, a date that also happens to be the same as the NCAA Division III National Meet.

GRINNELL, Iowa – After waiting 24 hours to learn its fate, the news was good for the Grinnell College men’s cross country team.
The Pioneers were chosen as an at-large qualifier for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Meet on Sunday, a day after placing fourth at the Central Region Meet at Oakland Acres Golf Course. The national meet is Nov. 22 at Hanover, Ind.
The top two Central Region teams, Nebraska Wesleyan and St. John’s (Minn.), earned automatic NCAA berths. Joining Grinnell as an at-large qualifier from the Central Region was St. Olaf (Minn.).
St. Norbert College junior Jenny Scherer qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship for the second consecutive year after a third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional hosted by Augustana College at Saukie Golf Course.
Scherer, who finished 61st at the 2007 NCAA National Meet, placed third by covering the 6-kilometer course in a time of 21 minutes 43 seconds. Scherer was 15 seconds off the first-place pace.
Monmouth sophomore Mary Kate Beyer became the first Fighting Scot woman to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Meet running a school-record 6k time of 21:58.4 to finish seventh. She shaved nearly a minute off her September time on the same course to also advance to next Saturday's National Meet at Hanover, Ind.

Grinnell College hosted the 2008 NCAA Division III Central Region Meet on Saturday November 15 at Oakland Acres Golf Course. The women finished in 17th place out of 26 competing squads, while the men finished in fourth place out of 26. Senior Henry Reich (upper left), juniors Sam Calisch (upper right) and David Montgomery (lower left), and sophomore Noah DeLong (lower right) were named all-region after their impressive finishes. Neither Pioneer squad will get an automatic qualifier into Nationals as only the top two squads from Regionals are taken, but an at-large bids are still possible.

Grinnell finished off their 25th school title in Men's Cross Country in perfect fashion Saturday morning in Galesburg. The Pioneer men swept the top five places for a perfect team score of 15 to win their 12-consecutive MWC Cross Country Championship. Grinnell's performance marked only the third time any team had recorded a perfect meet. Senior Henry Reich led the way for the victors as the Individual Champion with a time of 25:51.39.
The 2008 meet hosted by Knox College produced another piece of history as Monmouth captured the school's first Women's Championship, breaking a string of four-straight titles by Grinnell. The Fighting Scots made the title run on the shoulders of five All-Conference medalist performances paced by sophomore Mary Kate Beyer.
St. Norbert junior Jenny Scherer won the women's individual title with a mark of 21:24.25 beating her MWC-best mark by 12 seconds from the regular season.
Will Freeman was named Men's Coach of the Year and Roger Haynes was recognized as the Women's Coach of the Year.

Victor Finch (right), the head track and field coach at Ferris State University, is the new head cross country and trac k & field coach at Lawrence University. Finch's hiring was announced Thursday by co-Interim Director of Athletics Chris Howard.
A native of Midland, Mich., Finch brings two decades of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level to the job. Finch also has coached two Olympic sprinters who ran in a combined three Olympic Games (1988, 1996, 2000).
A graduate of Indiana State University, Finch majored in physical education and starred in cross country and track and field for the Sycamores.
Finch began his coaching career at Southwestern Michigan College, where he coached sprinter Laurel Johnson. Johnson was a national champion in Jamaica in the 100 and 200 meters and competed in the 1988 Olympics. Finch then served as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level at Indiana State, Eastern Michigan University, and Michigan State University and also coached at Northwood University, a NCAA Division II school.
In one season as the head coach at Ferris State, Finch recruited and coached Amy Woodman to the 2008 NCAA title in the long jump. Ferris State had a school-record seven national qualifiers in 2008. In addition to his track and field duties, Finch was the assistant men's and women's cross country coach at both Northwood and Ferris State. In one season with the cross country squads at Ferris, both teams saw dramatic improvements in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Five Midwest Conference cross country student-athletes from three league schools were selected as to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association's (USTFCCCA) National All-Academic Team.
Grinnell led the MWC with three women’s selections, as senior Allison Louthan, junior Becky Bessinger and senior Sarah Spencer were honored. Ripon sophomore Jessica Davey rounded out the women’s selections. Monmouth sophomore Clay Staley was the conference’s lone representative on the men’s All-Academic squad.

Days after earning All-American honors at the 2007 NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships, Grinnell seniors Sarah Spencer (right) and Allison Louthan (left) were honored on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-American Team ( USTFCCCA).
The NCAA and USTFCCCA honor competitors who finish in the top 35 in the country at the NCAA National meet as All-Americans. Spencer finished sixth and Louthan 32nd at the 2007 National Meet, which was held at St. Olaf’s home course in Northfield, Minnesota on Saturday, November 17.
