St. Norbert's Jandron Gets Pre-season Recognition

De Pere , Wis. -- Tony Jandron, a senior pitcher and shortstop for the St. Norbert College baseball team, has been selected to the D3Baseball.com preseason all-American team as an honorable-mention utility player.

Jandron has been an all-Midwest Conference selection every year of his
career and he has been named to the NCAA D3 all-region team twice. The Negaunee, Mich., native has a career batting average of .327 and a career record of 16-8 on the mound.

The Green Knights open their season in Florida on March 14. SNC will
play the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in a doubleheader in its home opener on March 28.
 
 
Kovach Earns D3Baseball Pre-season Honor

Beloit, Wis. -- Mike Kovach, a junior right-handed pitcher/utility player for the Beloit College Baseball team, has been named Honorable Mention as a utility player on the D3Baseball.com Pre-Season All-American team.

Kovach, a native of Plainfield, Illinois/Joliet Catholic, hit .451 with a home run and 30 runs-batted-in last season as the Buccaneers captured the Midwest Conference Championship and made their first appearance in the NCAA Division Tournament.

He also went 6-1 on the mound in eight appearances.

Kovach set or tied nine single-season records, including at bats (164), runs scored (46), hits (74), batting average, singles (58), doubles (14), total bases (93), stolen bases (34) and games played (37).
 
 
DeGeorge Named WBCA College Coach of the Year

Madison, Wis. -- Dave DeGeorge, preparing to enter his 20th season as head coach of the Beloit College Baseball team, has been named the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year.

Under DeGeorge, the Bucs battled through a season like no other on the books in 2009, finishing with a 28-9 overall record while going 11-5 in the Midwest Conference and winning their first-ever Midwest Conference Championship. An MWC Tournament Championship, also their first ever, catapulted the squad to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the first time in the program’s history.

The team broke or tied 50 game, season and career records during the campaign.

The award will be formally presented to DeGeorge at the WBCA Awards Banquet on February 13, in Middleton, Wisconsin.
 
 
Grinnell's Kahn Continues Baseball Career With Prestigious League in South Africa

Grinnell, IowaFormer Grinnell College pitching star Gary Kahn ’09 continues to make his mark in baseball overseas.

After playing in the top league in Sweden the past four months, Kahn has taken his talents to a league in South Africa. He signed a six-month contract to play for the Durbanville Villains of the Western Province Major League, which is the South African equivalent of Major League Baseball in the United States.

The league is a 10-team wooden bat league that has produced numerous signees for professional baseball, and more than three-quarters of the players from the South African National Team that competed in the recent World Baseball classic came from the league. Durbanville is about 20 kilometers from Cape Town.

Monmouth's Bourne named All-Region

Monmouth, Ill. - An award from a national coaches organization capped a stellar season for Monmouth College senior Matt Bourne (Bloomington, Ill./Central Catholic).

Bourne, a left-handed pitcher, was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Central Region Third Team. He posted a 6-2 record with a 3.34 ERA - both career bests - and led the team with five complete games and 64.2 innings pitched. His 39 strikeouts, 10 appearances and opponent's .249 batting average were all second on the Fighting Scots' staff. The southpaw also earned his first All-Midwest Conference selection on the heels of the Scots' eighth South Division title in nine years.
