2003 Performers of the Week
 
Week 1: March 31, 2003

Nick Johnson
Ripon

Johnson, a senior outfielder/pitcher from Prescott, Wis., hit .600 and posted a 2-0 record as a pitcher. Johnson went 24-for-40 with two doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 16 runs batted in. That translates into a 1.05 slugging percentage. He had a 3-1 win over Augustana and a 13-8 vistory over Amherst.

Week 2: April 7, 2003


Beau Hellman
Monmouth

Hellman, a senior pitcher from Ottawa, Ill./Marquette turned in a superb pitching performance in a 5-0 shutout of Grinnell on Sunday. Hellman went the distance, allowing just two hits over nine innings, as just four Grinnell hitters reached base. He struck out nine and walked one to improve his record to 3-0 and lower his ERA to 0.43. He has allowed just one earned run in 21 innings. Hellman also stroked a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Week 3: April 14, 2003

Justin Behm
St. Norbert

Behm, a senior designated hitter from Port Washington, Wis., hit .462 (6-for-11) for the week with four runs scored, four home runs, and seven runs batted in. The four homers helped Behm compile a 1.385 slugging percentage for the week. The senior accounted for five of St. Norbert’s seven runs in the doubleheader against Ripon, with two, two-run home runs and a solo shot. Behm then hit another two-run blast in a 6-5 at Ripon, the Green Knights’ first win at Francis Field since 1998.

Week 4: April 21, 2003


Beau Hellman
Monmouth

Hellman, a senior pitcher from Ottawa, Ill. (Marquette HS), helped Monmouth to a split of a doubleheader with Knox. The senior went 1-for-4 in the opener with 3 runs batted in, all courtesy of a three-run triple that tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. In the second game, Hellman pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits in the victory. Hellman also went 3-for-5 with one run batted in. For the two games, the senior went 4-for-9 (.444) with four runs batted in, also improving his pitching record to 5-0 on the season.

Week 4: April 21, 2003


Anthony Kouba
Lawrence

Kouba, a sophomore pitcher/outfielder from Roselle, Ill. (Lake Park HS), led Lawrence to a split of a Midwest Conference doubleheader with Carroll. The sophomore went 2-for-2 in the first game, a 6-2 Lawrence win, with two runs scored and three runs batted in. In the nightcap, Kouba went 3-for-5 with one run scored. For the two games, Kouba was 5-for-7 with two doubles, three runs batted in, a 1.000 slugging percentage, a .778 on-base percentage, and handled seven chances in the field without an error.

Week 5: April 28, 2003

Nick Johnson
Ripon

Johnson, a senior outfielder from Prescott, Wis. (Prescott HS), led Ripon to an 8-0 record this past week. The senior batted .571 (20-for-35) with four home runs and 20 runs batted in as Ripon posted doubleheader sweeps of Edgewood and Carroll as well as a four-game sweep of Beloit. Ripon is now 23-2 overall, 11-1 in the Midwest Conference.

Week 6: May 5, 2003


Toby Lannholm
Monmouth

Lannholm, a senior pitcher from Galesburg, Ill. (Galesburg HS), hurled a four-hit, complete game shutout in his only action of the week, blanking Grinnell 3-0 while striking out four and walking one. The senior lowered his overall earned run average to 1.18, and his conference earned run average finished at a perfect. 0.00 through 14 innings.
