Week 1: March 26, 2007

Robbie Unsell - Grinnell College - Junior
Second Base - East Alton, Ill./Civic Memorial

Unsell has appeared in 12 games for the Pioneers this season and is batting a team-best .545. In 33 at-bats, he has 18 hits, including three doubles, and has driven in nine runs while scoring 11. In addition, he is perfect on the base paths with 11 stolen bases in 11 attempts. Nine of those contests came on the road last week, when Grinnell posted a 6-3 mark en route to an 8-5 start on the year.

Jake Gasser - St. Norbert College - Junior
RHP - Coleman, Wis./Coleman

Gasser threw St. Norbert’s first no-hitter since 1989 with a 3-0 shutout win over Worcester State, setting down the Lancers on 59 pitches, on March 23. He also beat Hope 3-0 on March 19, scattering five hits. Gasser has not allowed a run in 14 innings of work this season, allowing just five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Opponents are batting a miniscule .109 against him this season.

Jeremy Kafka - Monmouth College - Senior
Outfield/DH - Huntley, Ill./Huntley

Kafka continued his strong season at the plate last week, banging out three hits in both of Monmouth’s contests during the week. The senior rightfielder finished the week 6-for-9 with two RBI as the Scots picked up non-conference victories over Eureka (8-6) and Iowa Wesleyan (10-6). Two of his Kafka’s hits were doubles, giving him an .889 slugging percentage for the week.

Week 3: April 9, 2007

Jon Moran - Beloit College - Sophomore
Outfield - Montrose, Colo.

In the Bucs home sweep of Lawrence (8-3, 7-6) on Saturday, Moran went 5-for-9 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. Included in that effort was an RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth when the Bucs rallied from a 6-2 deficit to win game two 7-6. The sophomore outfielder increased his hitting streak to seven games, in which he is hitting .453.

Week 4: April 16, 2007

Dan Weitzel - St. Norbert College - Senior
Second Base - Racine/Horlick

In six games, Weitzel hit .556 (15-for-27) with two doubles, one home run, eight RBI and seven runs scored. He also walked twice to give him an on-base percentage of .586 to go along with three stolen bases. Playing second base, he fielded 20 chances without error. In the four-game MWC sweep of Carroll, the senior second basemen hit .588 (10-for-17) and on the season is hitting .448 (30-for-67).

LHP - Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton

Dwyer picked up two wins in his only two starts last week. In a 10-2 win at Carroll, he threw eight innings of five-hit ball, allowing one earned run, while striking out 10 batters. The freshman lefty pitched a complete game six-hitter against Beloit over the weekend, posting 10 strike outs once again as he allowed one earned run in a 4-3 Red Hawk victory. The wins helped Ripon establish a record for consecutive conference victories with 25, topping the previous mark of 19.
 
Week 5: April 23, 2007

Adam Frost - St. Norbert College - Sophomore
Shortstop - Sobieski, Wis./Pulaski

In five games last week, Frost batted .593, hitting safely 16 times in 27 at-bats. He drilled seven doubles and one home run and had 10 RBI with a pair of stolen bases. In Saturday’s 11-10 win over Lawrence, the sophomore shortstop hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to give St. Norbert a lead it would never relinquish. In MWC play this year Frost is hitting .537 and overall on the year he is hitting .505. He has 17 multi-hit games and currently has a 16-game hitting streak.

Kevin Kangas - Lawrence University - Senior
LHP - Chassell, Mich./Chassell

Kangas was 2-0 on the week, as he picked up victories against UW-Stout and handed St. Norbert its first conference loss of the season. Kangas threw 14 innings on the week, striking out 12 and walking five with a 3.86 ERA. In a 6-4 win over Stout, he went five innings, allowed two runs, struck out seven and walked four. In Lawrence’s 8-5 win over St. Norbert, he pitched all nine innings, allowed four earned runs, struck out five and walked one. On the season, Kangas is 2-3 with a 2.54 ERA. His 50 strikeouts in 39 innings ranks second in NCAA Division III in strikeouts per game.
 
Week 6: April 30, 2007

Tony Jandron - St. Norbert College - Freshman
Utility - Negaunee, Mich./Negaunee

Jandron hit a robust .476 (10-21) with seven runs scored, four doubles, one triple, three RBI and one stolen base as St. Norbert went 4-2 last week. The freshman utility player also posted an on-base percentage of .542 as the Green Knights clinched an MWC Championship Tournament berth with a four-game sweep of Beloit. In the four-game set against the Bucs, Jandron hit .500 (8-16) and had a key two-run double as St. Norbert rallied to win the last game of the series 9-4. In the third game of the series, Jandron pitched seven innings, scattering four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in seven innings.

Bryant Bednarek - Ripon College - Senior
RHP - Berlin, Wis./Berlin

Bednarek made four relief appearances last week, earning a victory and a pair of saves as the Red Hawks locked up a spot in the 2007 MWC Championship Tournament. The senior righty allowed eight hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of action. Bednarek picked up the win in game two against Lawrence on Sunday after throwing two innings of two-hit ball to earn the save in the first contest that day. He earned his first save of the season a day earlier with a perfect ninth inning against the Vikings.
 
Week 7: May 7, 2007

Tommy Schmidt - Lawrence University - Sophomore First Base - Two Rivers, Wis./Mishicot
Schmidt hit a blistering .750 for the week by going 12-for-16 with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI in four games against Carroll. Schmidt scored eight runs, compiled a .789 on-base percentage and a 1.313 slugging percentage in the series. The sophomore first basemen started his week by going 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI in Lawrence’s 10-0 series-opening victory. In the series finale, Schmidt tied the school record for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and six RBI.

Luke Wissbroecker - St. Norbert College - Freshman
RHP - Pickerel, Wis./Elcho

Wissbroecker turned in one of the best long-relief performances in school history on Friday in the Green Knights’ 1-0 win over Ripon in 11 innings. Wissbroecker came on in the fifth inning and closed out the game to earn his first collegiate win. In 6 1/3 innings, he allowed just one hit, no runs, two walks and struck out three. He allowed just one hit in 20 Ripon at-bats for a batting average against of .050 in the game.
