RIPON, WI – It was just a matter of wanting to go home.
That’s how Gordie Gillespie described his decision to resign his position as Ripon College head baseball coach to take the same position at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Ill. Gillespie made the announcement earlier today (May 9).
“St. Francis contacted me in early March before we left for the baseball trip to Florida and told me they would like me to come back to Joliet and coach baseball and help them do some development work. My wife, Joan, and I thought about it for the longest time,” said Gillespie, the winningest baseball coach in NCAA history with 1,671 victories. “We have a lot of family back in the Joliet area and Joan thought she would feel more comfortable there in case something happened to me.”
The legendary coach leaves the Red Hawk baseball program in great shape. After 10 campaigns under Gillespie’s watchful eye, Ripon College has become one of the premiere teams in the Midwest Conference and an annual contender for postseason play. Gillespie is 233-127 with the Red Hawks, including six North Division titles and five Midwest Conference Championships while being selected as the 1997, 1999, 2000 and 2003 Midwest Conference Coach of the Year. Ripon College has also made the NCAA Division III playoffs five of the last six seasons.
“Of course, it will be difficult to replace someone like Gordie. Not only is he a great coach, but he is also my father and that makes his decision to take the St. Francis position that much more difficult,” said Bob Gillespie, Ripon College athletic director. “However, I am excited about this new challenge for him and I have no doubt Gordie will do a great job for St. Francis. My relationship with him will continue to grow even stronger and I look forward to following the success of his program.”
The Ripon College baseball program has experienced much success throughout its 50-year existence. The Red Hawks have won an overall team total of 610 games for a .560 winning percentage, one of the best in the history of the Midwest Conference. Ripon College has led the league in championships, garnering a total of 14 shared or outright titles. The Red Hawks’ first league crown came in 1962 with Ripon College going on to win four of the next five championships. The Red Hawks have also finished second in the MWC a total of 15 times.
Ripon College closed out its regular season this past weekend with a doubleheader split at Carroll College. That earned the Red Hawks, currently 20-13 on the year, a spot in next week’s Midwest Conference Championships. The tournament will be Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, at St. Norbert College. The Red Hawks open play on Friday with Monmouth College.
Before taking over the reins at Ripon College, Gillespie coached Lewis College and the University of St. Francis where he made 15 trips to the NAIA World Series and won four national championships.
Gillespie will be replacing long-time coach and former Gillespie protégé’ Tony Delgado at the University of St. Francis. Delgado directed his troops to a 29-27 overall mark this past season and helped the Saints earn a berth in the NAIA Region VII Tournament.
“Tony decided earlier this year to retire and spend more time with is family. I certainly understand that,” said Gillespie. “Tony played for me and coached under me when I was at St. Francis. He’s done a great job with that program and I hope to continue that level of success.”
Gillespie will begin his 53 rd year of coaching next season at the University of St. Francis. During that time, he has signed 58 players to professional contracts, including the first ever from Ripon College, Matt Denure, in 1998.
As a head coach of three sports at Joliet (Ill.) Catholic High School early in his career, Gillespie earned the distinction of being the only coach in Illinois High School history to be named to the Hall of Fame in football, basketball and baseball.
Gillespie is a 1949 graduate of DePaul University. |
